GARY NUMAN IN CONCERT:

Inimitable new wave necromancer Gary Numan is as celebrated for cult classics like "Down in the Park" as he is for mainstream '80s superhits like "Cars." Masterfully balancing mass appeal and a darker edge, Numan led audiences through the full gamut of emotions at his 2013 shows, shifting from vitriolic sneer to vulnerable yelp and back again as he wended his way through fan favorites like "Complex" and "We Are Glass." Featuring a full band, an army of icy synths, and his signature lighting design, Numan's 2014 tour dates will deliver more of the intense spectacle he's become known for.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

English-born Gary Numan pioneered commercial electronic music in the late '70s and early '80s with his icy, angular, synth-drenched take on pop's new wave. Following a stint fronting epochal electronic rock outfit Tubeway Army, he struck out on his own, landing three consecutive No. 1's on the UK Albums chart between 1979-1980. Numan's fascination with dystopian themes and technology was a through-line in his music,  and nowhere was it more apparent than on "Cars," his first international No. 1 and a defining moment in new wave music. A consummate showman made legendary by his spectacularly choreographed live shows, Numan continues to record and tour, hitting the road once again in 2014 in support of his 22nd studio album Splinter (Songs From a Broken Mind).

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Gary is still an amazing performer! His band is so talented and energetic! The show was completely mesmerizing! Well worth the ticket price!"

"Fabulous concert -- by turns edgy and vulnerable, hard driving and lyrical. Gary is a superb performer as one can see just by listening to his many live albums and watching his concert videos"

"If anyone asks you, 'Gary Numan... in 2010?' the answer is YES. Phenomenal show. Pleasure Principle came out in 1979 so you might think this could sound dated but it didn't at all! He's a tremendous performer and the sound was spectacular."

    Quintessential Rock Frontman...

    by RainOm on 2023-10-04

I saw Gary and band in Winnipeg, MB, Canada on a frosty winter's evening at The Pyramid Cabaret a few years back; I was absolutely blown away by the spectacle of it all. The show went down on my very short list of concerts that have left an indelible mark on my consciousness and seem to linger on within for life. This is not an understatement. Gary's presence as one of rock's great frontmen was solidified and I knew I was witnessing one of music's great entertainers who will surely remain as a standout in rock's history far long after he leaves us.... but let's hope that's not for a long time, lol. His band also has to get a mention (as does his daughter who sang with him on a couple of tunes); they were tight, talented and almost as mesmerizing as Gary was! Definitely a perfect compliment. I highly recommend that everyone gets Gary Numan 2023 onto their radar because this Gary is very different from Gary of yesteryear.

Gary was awesome! Opening act was awful!

by K. MacIntosh on 2023-05-17Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Been a fan since 79! Great songs and great sound! Not disappointed! Opening act however was so loud and distorted you couldn’t make anything out! It was just noise.

Gary Numan put on one of the best shows we’ve seen

by NiceGuyEddie on 2023-05-17Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

What a great show, what a performance. Great music catalogue of his to choose from. And the Commodore Ballroom is the best place to see live music. I have no need to go to big stadium shows with a venue like this…the Commodore…rocked and the staff was great as usual.

    Awesome concert!

by KD on 2023-05-17Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

I have been a Gary Numan fan since 1979, great show! He played the old hits and I love his new albums and music as well. I won't lie to you, the opening act was really loud and it was painful, but hey, Gary Numan was awesome, haha! Commodore is a great venue, they have the best fried chicken sandwiches, the space is gorgeous. I will definitely come back anytime Gary Numan is in town and for other concerts as well!

    Metal Experience

    by Ilovethe80's on 2023-05-17Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

This is not the Gary that we know from the 80's. We see Gary every time he comes to Vancouver. He is progressively getting more metal. Not to say this is bad... but, be prepared for a very loud metal experience. He mostly played his two recent albums which is quite a bit different from his early goth synth. This is not Goth it is closer to slash metal...bring ear plugs if you are an old gal like me...

    Pure enjoyment

by Wednesdaygirl on 2010-10-30The Opera House - Toronto

The music was fabulous and Gary Numan has such excellent stage presence, so it was a visual treat too. I appreciated that the show was generous in duration and the encore too. I hope he comes back to Toronto soon.

    Gary Numan Pleasure Principle Tour

by Arkio on 2010-10-30The Opera House - Toronto

What a treat hearing classics like Conversation, Complex and Films along with, well the entire Pleasure Principle album....fantastic. Cudos to Gary for performing them as they were recorded 30 years ago, with those Virus TI's reproducing the Moog synthesizers of old perfectly. Great stage lighting and visuals this time round. Listening to the new stuff and comparing it to the older, what a contrast....but still very cool. What a prolific artist that just keeps impressing. This guy is 50+ and still kicking it like few artists today can even dream to. Can't wait for his new album...

    Principal of Pleasure

by Ronnyroo on 2010-10-27The Opera House - Toronto

I've seen a lot of shows and I'm a total New Wave junkie so I had to see this 30th anniversery tour since the release of "The Pleasure Principal". Gary ripped through that album performing every song in sequence with total conviction to the original sound but that was only the 1st half of the show. Metal is one of the greatest songs ever and the crowd was instantly his by this 3rd song of the set. Then to most people's surprise (not mine though since I've been keeping up with his new stuff) the music got harder and louder as he performed his new material. Although this was most people's fist time hearing it, the reaction was very strong and I heard many people say how amazing it all was. he also did other classics like Cars of course, Down In The Park and Are Friends Electric. The Opera House was packed and rocking they way it always should be. Gary Numan has the most amazing stage presence and he has only gotten better with time. He seemed to love the crowd as much as we were all just completely mesmarized. Much to my delightfull surprise, Nash The Slash warmed us up and what a perfect choice. Concerts are dicey to me but this evening was sublime.
