About

IAN THORNLEY IN CONCERT:

Rocker Ian Thornley brings an electrifying blend of prog-worthy musicianship and touching folk songwriting to the stage every time he performs. Thornley made a name for himself with Canadian post-grunge quintet Big Wreck, and he brings the same soulful vocals and lightning fast licks to his solo project. At his virtuosic live performances the endlessly talented songwriter and performer fires on all cylinders, reinventing favorites like “Ghosts”, “Blown Wide Open”, and “You Caught My Eye” with extended solos that leave fans stunned. With a talented rhythm section adding serious oomph at every turn, Thornley and company keep the energy high and always get ticket buyers moving to the groove. Fans looking for an excuse to rock out shouldn’t pass up the opportunity to witness Ian Thornley’s thunderous sound in concert.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Toronto native Ian Thornley honed his chops at Boston’s Berklee College of Music—the most renowned jazz and contemporary music program in the world. He formed Big Wreck in 1993 with some of his fellow classmates, and after they finished school he talked the group into relocating to Canada. They struck a deal with Atlantic Records and released their 1997 debut album In Memory Of…, scoring a major hit in Canada with the rock radio staple “Under the Lighthouse". Following a stint on tour opening for Dream Theater and the release of 2001’s The Pleasure and the Greed, Big Wreck decided to split up. Thornley resurfaced in 2004 with his debut solo album Come Again, which showed off the same guitar prowess and solid songwriting that had earned Big Wreck such a loyal following. He reunited with bassist Brian Doherty in 2010, and two years later Big Wreck came back in a big way with the album Albatross. Whether he’s playing solo or tearing it up with Big Wreck, Ian Thornley’s touching songwriting and astounding instrumental chops always leave ticket buyers thoroughly rocked.

Ian is by far the most talented musician I have had the pleasure of listening to over the years. He never disappoints when I have the opportunity to see him play in person. Secrets is a beautiful album. Not so super fans may have expected Big Wreck songs, and they may have went home disappointed...that's not what this show was about...my most favorite song is secrets...we all have them. his voice, his guitar playing are top top top mad skills. love love love love this man....he is hot, hot hot.

Ian Thornley provides several face melters!

Great show. Obviously you're going to get an amazing guitar performance every time you see Ian Thornley. He played electric for most songs, and a few with acoustic in the middle of the set. There is a four piece band for this tour. Please note the setlist contained only 3 Big Wreck songs (did not sound like the album versions) and zero Thornley songs. So he is mostly focussed on his new solo material. If you're hoping to hear Big Wreck songs all night you will be dissapointed!

    Ian Thornley doesn't dissapoint.

Been a fan since the days of early Big Wreck, through Thornley and now even with his own stuff. The common factor is Ian Thornley. Both his guitar playing and singing are out of this world. If you are even a remote fan and haven't seen him live in one capacity or another, you're missing out.

    Thornley can be thorny

by JGM1 on 2015-12-18Molson Canadian Studio at Hamilton Place - Hamilton

This is a great project. Superlative guitar work, soaring vocals, and a bunch of really good songs. If that's all you need, then you'll love the show. But don't be looking for great stage presence. This guy is a serious musician, who takes himself and his music very seriously. Just ask the one slightly intoxicated audience member who shouted out "play diamonds" once too often. Also, the sound guy could have mixed it a little better... too much ringing mid-range.

    Thornley Rocked the nation

by Josh14 on 2010-11-25Tequila Night Club - Saskatoon

Great intimate show, not the big lights, fireworks pyros etc but straight up hard rock. I got shivers down my neck when They busted into that song. Ian Thornley has the voice of Fergie and Jesus combined. Hands down great show
