MOS DEF / YASIIN BEY IN CONCERT:

As one of hip hop's most revered lyricists, Mos Def never ceases to surprise and impress with his dexterous flow. On stage, he cuts a stylish figure, effortlessly displaying his wordsmithing skills, charismatic energy, and boundless positivity while paying tribute to cultural icons like Mohammed Ali. Whether performing with longtime collaborator Talib Kweli or rolling solo, Mos makes sure crowds are bumped, grinded, and fully educated in the "fundamental mathematics" of his intricate verses, laying it down as only he can on tracks like "Ms. Fat Booty" and "Body Rock." With a highly anticipated new album in the works, Mos will treat fans to another dose of cerebral hip hop on his 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Dante Terrell Smith, best known by his stage names Mos Def and Yasiin Bey, is a Brooklyn-born rapper, actor, and producer. His hip hop career began in the early '90s with local alt-rappers Da Bush Babees and De La Soul, with whom he collaborated before releasing his debut single "Universal Magnetic." In 1998, he teamed up with Talib Kweli to form the duo Black Star, whose debut LP is considered a contemporary classic and major influence over the "backpack rap" scene. As a solo artist, Mos Def has released four albums to critical and commercial acclaim, firmly establishing his reputation as one of the genre's most stylish lyricists. Reuniting with Talib Kweli for several highly anticipated Black Star shows in 2014, Mos has fans eagerly awaiting more as rumors of new material mount.

    The Mighty Mos Delivers

by mgryoung on 2009-09-09Flames Central - Calgary

This marks the first time I have ever had the privilege of seeing Mos Def in concert. I wasn't really sure what to expect, and I have to say I was blown away. Throughout the 90ish minute set, he played under 10 of his own, from album, songs. The remaining time was spent performing unique mashups including a cover of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean. Mos Def, is a true performer, and musician. Not only was a drum kit set up, that Mos, using Timpani mallets, performed the bass lines to the beats, but his vocal stylings were shown off with reggae inspired singing, into a classic 50's microphone. While performing Mos Def created a very intimate environment by communicating with the audience throughout the set. This seemed to help people really loosen up and just enjoy the music in their own way. One of the other most outstanding parts, that is so rare in live music today, was Mos' true appreciation of his fans. He continued to thank the audience, and his smile was magnetic. You could tell he was having the time of his life and it reflected in his performance. The bottom line is that seeing Mos Def is unlike any other artist live. If you are the type that just likes an artist to play their songs live and thats it, then you will likely not enjoy Mos. If you like to see how a true musician plays a live show, then Mos Def is for you. Either way its an experience in itself.

Mos Def was wicked good live

by superDef on 2009-08-30Flames Central - Calgary

I've been a fan of Mos Def for years but had never seen him live. He FAR exceeded my expecations, showing off his incredible flow (as expected) but also doing drumwork, singing, ineteresting sampling, and some rap covers of classics (MJ's thriller - incredible). The venue was a great and the overall production was impressive as well: the stage had oldschool ninja films and other vintage things playing in the background while Mos did his thing. Mos Def himself looked incredibly happy and was a ridiculously engaging performer. I loved this show. The opening acts were really good too!

    Mos Def, talent + entertainment

by rinn on 2009-08-30Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

Mos Def at the Vogue! His unique talents put on display at one of the best venues in Vancouver..... woot! What a show! He had a number of very talented artists open up the show for him, but Mos Def stole the stage with his classically and internationally inspired hip hop education. I can not wait for Mos Def to come back to Vancouver.

by Kathleenryan on 2009-08-29Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

This show was a massive success. The venue was packed with a vibe to party but as usual mos created an intimate atmosphere full of classic throw backs. Mos mixed his new album ecstatic along side his greatest achievements such as traveling man, ms. fat booty and sex, love money. Mad interaction with the crowd kept everyone on their toes and dancing. Something to be desired...

by HooHah on 2009-08-28Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

Mos Def is awesome, and a very talented artist. The venue was disappointing and definitely not a place I would pay to see a hip hop performance again...I don't even feel like I can adequately review his performance because of it. Plus we had to wait nearly an hour between the opening acts and Mos Def...kind of a buzz kill.
