MOS DEF / YASIIN BEY IN CONCERT:

As one of hip hop's most revered lyricists, Mos Def never ceases to surprise and impress with his dexterous flow. On stage, he cuts a stylish figure, effortlessly displaying his wordsmithing skills, charismatic energy, and boundless positivity while paying tribute to cultural icons like Mohammed Ali. Whether performing with longtime collaborator Talib Kweli or rolling solo, Mos makes sure crowds are bumped, grinded, and fully educated in the "fundamental mathematics" of his intricate verses, laying it down as only he can on tracks like "Ms. Fat Booty" and "Body Rock." With a highly anticipated new album in the works, Mos will treat fans to another dose of cerebral hip hop on his 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Dante Terrell Smith, best known by his stage names Mos Def and Yasiin Bey, is a Brooklyn-born rapper, actor, and producer. His hip hop career began in the early '90s with local alt-rappers Da Bush Babees and De La Soul, with whom he collaborated before releasing his debut single "Universal Magnetic." In 1998, he teamed up with Talib Kweli to form the duo Black Star, whose debut LP is considered a contemporary classic and major influence over the "backpack rap" scene. As a solo artist, Mos Def has released four albums to critical and commercial acclaim, firmly establishing his reputation as one of the genre's most stylish lyricists. Reuniting with Talib Kweli for several highly anticipated Black Star shows in 2014, Mos has fans eagerly awaiting more as rumors of new material mount.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"This was a dreamy, uplifting, soul-satisfying, freaky, funky time well spent!"

"I've always wanted to see MOS DEF/Yasiin Bey in concert. He didn't disappoint... Great energy..!"

"Mos is 100% in the moment and his show was an intimate experience with a nearly sold out crowd of true Mos Def fans. Great ambiance, music, flow -- and who knew Mos could step and dance like he did."

    Mos Def

by Altruism on 2009-08-28Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

Mos Def concert on August 27, 2009: The venue was the Vogue Theatre on Granville which was nice, not too big, not too small...it created a great atmosphere for his concert. I particularly like his concerts because there are so many people from different backgrounds, cultures, genres all gathered for a positive reason, Mos Def. Jay Electronica killed his act. He got the crowd hyped right before Mos got on staff to beat his drums. Jay's lyrics were tight and his performance ability hype. I'd see Jay again most definitely. Boombox Saints did Vancity proud. They represented both Vancouver and their Filipino heritage well. Their rhymes were meaningful and current to the times. They get mad props for booking this gig to open for Mos Def. I'm sure it was an experience of a lifetime

it was ok, kind of boring at times

by cliffy on 2009-08-28Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

positives: - opening 1st acts were great, especially the locals on 1st - mos on the drums was entertaining - service staff was friendly and nice negatives: - they needed more bartenders, it was so slow - RAN OUT OF BOOSE! - sitting room only - not loud enough - boring at times, especially during the reggae interludes - too many interludes made it look unprofessional - the presentation as a whole seemed choppy at best - too pricey, had i known what i was in for i probably wouldnt pay it again

    mos def greatness

by Moath on 2009-08-28Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

Gin electronica just drained me out of my energy, when Mos Def came on I was so tired, but he's a legend so it all came back. Good mix of old and new. Only drawback was it was packed and Vogue doesn't really have a "dance" floor so dancing and standing infront of your seat wasn't too hot.

    Mos def =Best live Rapper

by Somawouldbenice on 2009-08-28Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

three hours after the doors opened, after sitting through three sub par opening acts Most def ripped out on to the stage playing along to the beat of his opening song on a drum kit and everybody awakened from the sleeper we'd been put into by the openers. Vancouver is not known for being the most energetic or "into the show" city but This was an exception. second best show I've seen in van this year other than TV on the Radio.

    It's the Mighty Mos Def!!

by Indelaxiom on 2009-08-28Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

OK, if you weren't at the Vogue Theater to see Mos Def, you truly missed out on a great performance. Many thought that Mos was starting to fall off the hip hop radar and become ho-hum but last night he set the record straight with his banging delivery of new joints and unforgettable classics. The opening acts of Whosane and Jay Electronica were equally amazing and only served to pepper up the audience just so that Mos could knock it out the park. Only gripe were the theater seats as it was my first hip hop show in such a venue but I made my way to the open spot in the front and all was OK. My best show of 2009!!

Mos Def knows how to throw a good show. From beginning to end, he just played some good music and entertained us. I've seen a lot of hip hop shows and I gotta say this one is way up there. Thanks Mos!

    by Lalalove8 on 2009-08-26Flames Central - Calgary

Mos Def conveyed his artistic ability with his performance, the integration of various genres of music as well as show casing some of his best and well known tracks. His presence on stage is unforgettable and intriguing and I would reccommend any one to check out his vibe!

    Mos Def is a god

by FreakyRadio on 2009-08-26Flames Central - Calgary

Great openers, including some local talent. Mos made us wait a little too long in between Jay Electronica (who got the crowd amped up) and himself but it was more than worth the wait. A wide mix of music from all of his albums with an understandable focus on his new amazing album The Ecstatic.

    Worth the admission

by bessettp on 2009-08-26Flames Central - Calgary

The show in Calgary was top dollar. Worth the hefty admission as Mos perfermed for over an hour and a half new, old and some seemingly improvised material. Fantastic.

    Mos Definately Disappointing

by Carwash on 2009-07-14House of Blues Sunset Strip - Hollywood

Don't get me wrong--I'm a Mos Def fan. With all the crap that surfaces in the world of hip-hop, it's nice to see a unique, positive poet like Mos Def do his thing and succeed. But myself and number of audience members who also left 30-45 minutes after the show started were sorely disappointed at the boring, droning and down-right crappy vocals by this well established MC. On the flipside, as soon as he quit singing and busted out his old-school rap classics, everybody started feeling it, the place was getting hyped and Mos Def kicked it with fluid perspicacity . Unfortunately, however, most of the show was comprised of his weak vocals as he tried his hand at blues, reggae and other genres he should steer clear of in the future.
