About

Pavement on Tour

For the first time in more than a decade, '90s indie rock band Pavement are sending nostalgia shockwaves to fans and audience members around the world with their 2022 reunion tour set to hit more than 30 cities across North America, the UK and Europe. Known perhaps as the line of demarcation between punk and garage alternative, Pavement are considered to be one of the most important indie rock bands of the '90s, drawing parallels to Built to Spill, R.E.M., the Pixies, and Sonic Youth. Despite making waves nearly 30 years ago, Pavement's timeless sound continues to draw in fans -- whether they're hearing them for the first time or looking for a dose of nostalgia. While Pavement's sound and style led to an underground, cult-classic following, the band did achieve fringe mainstream success with their hit "Cut Your Hair" from their 1994 album Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. Other studio releases include their 1992 debut Slanted and Enchanted, 1995's Wowee Zowee, 1997's Brighten the Corners, and 1999's Terror Twilight. Most recently, the group has re-released their most successful album with previously unreleased music. Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal, is a 45-track live set featuring the remastered original album, B-sides, home demos, rehearsal tapes, 28 unreleased tracks, and a the previously unreleased new single "Be the Hook."

Pavement Live in Concert

Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg were childhood friends from Stockton, California, who had a passion for music at an early age. However, before forming Pavement,  Malkmus spent time at the University of Virginia where he graduated with a degree in history. It wasn't until after his time in college that he returned home and the two formed the garage band that was part of the underground rock wave that saturated the music space in the '90s. Pavement recorded their first EP, Slay Tracks: (1933-1969) in 1989 in a local studio run by Gary Young and released it under Young's label Treble Kicker. Young was officially added to the group with the recording of the follow-up project Demolition Plot J-7 under the label Drag City Records. The band would hit the touring scene for the first time in 1991 with the release of the EP Perfect Sound Forever where they added bassist Mark Ibold and a second drummer, Bob Nastanovich. Pavement released their debut album, Slanted and Enchanted, in 1992, garnering critical praise that spread throughout the underground rock scene. They saw mainstream success with the single "Cut Your Hair," which made the Top 10 on Billboard's Alternative Airplay chart and became an MTV phenomenon with the coinciding music video.

    Solid Show

    by Tanko on 2010-10-07Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

    Having not seen them in their heyday, I was really happy to get the chance to see Pavement live and it was a really good show. The vocals could have been louder, but I could say that about 1/2 the shows I see. They are lazy, awkward, fun and they rock ... exactly what you'd expect based on their music. Seeing Pavement live has gotten me fully into the band again. favorite moment: one member of pavement said it's a really good looking audience and Stephen frowned, scanned the audience and said "I don't know, I see a couple averages!".

    Ear plugs are not enough!

    by NOTtoneDEAF on 2010-09-12Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

    Sloppy garage grunge band. The lead singer/guitarist sounded better when he was balancing his guitar on one finger than when he actually tried to play it. Steer clear of seeing this band live unless you are tone deaf.

    Organization Failure with Amazing Bands!

    by Anonymous on 2010-07-01Toronto Centre Island (Olympic Island) - Toronto

    I loved the show. The bands were talented, interesting and energetic. The stage was an amazing set up as well. I would never have guessed it was entirely all around scaffold and that there was no Stageline involved if I hadn't of gotten a closer look at it. However, I found that the awesome factor of the show was pulled down by the fact that this was such a poorly organized event. The beer tent wasn't actually a tent for starters and then they take away your water when you go in the beer garden to stand in line for two hours in the blazing sun. Not okay. Then you get to the fact that it took two hours to get beer. Ridiculous! All this was compounded by the fact that the security guards were generally rude (particularly at the gate) and for the most part unwilling to assist with issues (from what i saw and heard standing near people talking to them). Overall my friends and I had a good time...after we got past the rude people and poorly organized beer garden.

    BSS Rocks

    by KJay on 2010-06-21Toronto Centre Island (Olympic Island) - Toronto

    Came to see Pavement, but Broken Social Scene stole the show. Awesome performance. Pavement on the other hand were sloppy, whiny and bickering on stage. Do not think they'll last the rest of their tour!

    brokensocialscene=epic

    by ihaveabellybutton22 on 2010-06-21Toronto Centre Island (Olympic Island) - Toronto

    they rock. between the well performed epic songs the dialogue was captivating and humorous while not too long. Fiest froliked out on stage and put on a good performance which led me to believe that would be it for guest then miss EmilyHaines walks out and (as always) A1. the day was sunny. the rain ponchos unnecessary. smiles were on tap. the beer tent was a little bogus. a line up to get in. a line up to get tickets. a line up to get beer. that seems a little uncanadian. the security guards took away my kite which i thought a little ridiculous after seeing people with umbrellas. other than that, id love to do it again. broken social scene are the definition of modern rock in toronto. thankyou for representing canada in a canadian way. many musical acts that are canadian make me feel ashamed to have our country represented in such a way. it is for this reason i am glad bss is making more world pop coverage. rock on.
