Pavement on Tour

For the first time in more than a decade, '90s indie rock band Pavement are sending nostalgia shockwaves to fans and audience members around the world with their 2022 reunion tour set to hit more than 30 cities across North America, the UK and Europe. Known perhaps as the line of demarcation between punk and garage alternative, Pavement are considered to be one of the most important indie rock bands of the '90s, drawing parallels to Built to Spill, R.E.M., the Pixies, and Sonic Youth. Despite making waves nearly 30 years ago, Pavement's timeless sound continues to draw in fans -- whether they're hearing them for the first time or looking for a dose of nostalgia. While Pavement's sound and style led to an underground, cult-classic following, the band did achieve fringe mainstream success with their hit "Cut Your Hair" from their 1994 album Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. Other studio releases include their 1992 debut Slanted and Enchanted, 1995's Wowee Zowee, 1997's Brighten the Corners, and 1999's Terror Twilight. Most recently, the group has re-released their most successful album with previously unreleased music. Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal, is a 45-track live set featuring the remastered original album, B-sides, home demos, rehearsal tapes, 28 unreleased tracks, and a the previously unreleased new single "Be the Hook."

Pavement Live in Concert

Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg were childhood friends from Stockton, California, who had a passion for music at an early age. However, before forming Pavement,  Malkmus spent time at the University of Virginia where he graduated with a degree in history. It wasn't until after his time in college that he returned home and the two formed the garage band that was part of the underground rock wave that saturated the music space in the '90s. Pavement recorded their first EP, Slay Tracks: (1933-1969) in 1989 in a local studio run by Gary Young and released it under Young's label Treble Kicker. Young was officially added to the group with the recording of the follow-up project Demolition Plot J-7 under the label Drag City Records. The band would hit the touring scene for the first time in 1991 with the release of the EP Perfect Sound Forever where they added bassist Mark Ibold and a second drummer, Bob Nastanovich. Pavement released their debut album, Slanted and Enchanted, in 1992, garnering critical praise that spread throughout the underground rock scene. They saw mainstream success with the single "Cut Your Hair," which made the Top 10 on Billboard's Alternative Airplay chart and became an MTV phenomenon with the coinciding music video.

    Pavement worth every cent

by Fitzgerald on 2010-06-21Toronto Centre Island (Olympic Island) - Toronto

The bands were all pretty impressive. Hilights for me were Band of Horses and Pavement. Obvious by crowd response that many in attendance were there for Broken Social Scene. Easily one of the top 5 shows I've ever been to. Beer tent lineups were terrible. Should learn from this error. In short, bands were incredible. Long , yet expected lineups for food. Need better beer vendors, or more of them.

Great event but the venue needed some improvement

by Turquoise on 2010-06-20Toronto Centre Island (Olympic Island) - Toronto

The bands were all amazing!!!! There were not enough food stands and people were not allowed to bring food so they had to line up for almost an hour for food. We were lucky with the weather but they were calling for thunderstorms all day and that concert would have been pretty unpleasant in a thunderstorm. They should have a covered area.

Music was great. Broken Social Scene seemed to be having a bunch of technical problems but they still sounded awesome. What I didn't like - Not allowed to bring food THEN on top of that, charging $10 for a plain cheese-burger. Swan burgers is trash in my mind just for that. They didn't even hang a sign out advertising their prices. That said, the lines for food were so disorganized that if you knew what line you were in, you wouldn't have been able to see the signs anyways. Another of my beefs was with the toilets. There was a good 5 to 10 minute line-up for them. Inside the beer area, there were almost just as many, and they were almost all free, but the guard said that if I wanted to use them, I would have to wait in the beer-line which was mind-bogglingly long. As much as I liked the music, I can't help but feel I've been exploited having gone to such an event. Heck, I probably would have felt fine paying more for the ticket if I wasn't charged unreasonably jacked up prices for food. Once you've been on the island for a few hours in the hot sun, you either have to eat at one of the vendors or leave and not come back, so they know they can charge ridiculous rates and still have huge lines of hungry people.

great music + cold beer + hot sun = fun!

by uglystick on 2010-06-20Toronto Centre Island (Olympic Island) - Toronto

Having listened to all the bands before, I knew what to expect. Which is why I purchased the tickets. Never knowing but always hoping everyone would show for Broken Social Scene I wasn't disapointed. Awsome show. And to top it off, I stood beside Kevin Drew on the ferry to the island, but chose not to bother him and ambarass myself in the meantime. Only downer was the line to purchase beer tickets. Can't wait 'till next year.

    Pavement Reunion

by beefchimi on 2010-06-20Toronto Centre Island (Olympic Island) - Toronto

Aside from the absurd restrictions and what attendees could bring to the island, and aside from the insanely overpriced food and drinks, it was an incredible event. The artists involved and their performances were top notch.

I couldn't believe how good Pavement has become over the years. The sounded just like all thier records with some tweeks that made a more inspired show. I was alittle disapointed thier wasnt more inprov in the lyrics, but it really didn't matter because everyone was singing and dancing along anyways. I am a HUGE fan so I am completely bias in this review. As for the venue..... It was a bitch to get off and they reall should have had more tents for a crowd as large as this one. The lines were way too intense.

The bands were outstanding and the weather could not have been better. But having to wait in line for 2 1/2 hours (no exaggeration) for drink tickets because only one staff was servicing several thousands of people, followed by having to wait in another line to redeem beer (only four per person cap!) with these tickets, hardly made the event worthwhile.

Pavement-Best Live Act of the Year

by karsius on 2010-06-20Toronto Centre Island (Olympic Island) - Toronto

Sweet festival. Pavement truly stole the show with their charismatic performance. Definitely a once in a lifetime event as they probably won't be on another tour after this reunion tour finishes. Beach House and Broken Social Scene provided really amazing performances as well.
