About

THE B-52S IN CONCERT:

Since forming in 1976, The B-52s have always stood out for their thrift-store chic style and ability to craft catchy, retro-inspired hits. Over the years they might have let their beehives down, but every-thing else about the band is still as tight as it was 30 years ago. Their call-and-response choruses always get fans singing along, and their fun and funky grooves will have you dancing right along with the band. The B-52s are taking their party atmosphere to select cities across the U.S. on their 2015 tour, bringing all their cool style and flamboyant fun to a town near you.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Named after a particular type of beehive hairdo, The B-52s rocketed out of Athens, Georgia in the late ’70s. Starting with their smash hit “Rock Lobster”, the band developed a reputation for campy fun and catchy melodies that carried over to other favorites like “Planet Claire” and “Private Idaho”. By the end of the decade, the band achieved a major mainstream radio breakthrough with the hits “Love Shack” and “Roam”. The band stayed relevant into the ’90s, appearing in The Flintstones live action movie (as “The BC-52’s”) and performing the theme song from the Nickelodeon cartoon Rocko’s Modern Life. Almost 40 years later, this zany garage band is still having a blast -- and still sounds like a blast from the past.

Two Out of Three Ain't Bad...

by YYZ67 on 2020-03-15Meridian Hall (formerly Sony Centre for the Performing Arts) - Toronto

Berlin as opener #1 - engaging, humorous and on point musically. You could tell Terri was having so much fun - and the love flowed back from the audience. OMD were insanely good. Voice as strong as ever, the band was energetic and frankly the highlight of the evening in every way. The B-52s were, well, flat. It honestly felt like they dialed it in. Low energy - something I'd never thought I'd see or say about THIS band. You had the distinct feeling they weren't really interested in being there, but very much looking forward to their paycheque and merch sales royalties. So disappointing - and many people around us were looking at each other, confused, muttering much the same thing.

    Wow! Kate and Cindy’s voices!

Their voice duets are still the best! The concert was full of classics from the band. Go see them live if you can, there are no new bands like them unfortunately. B-52s rocks!

    80's returned for a night...

by some old guy on 2019-09-19Meridian Hall (formerly Sony Centre for the Performing Arts) - Toronto

Berlin was a great band to watch. Terri and the guys did a great job on all the old songs and the new ones sounded fantastic. OMD was truly extraordinary..they put on one hell of a show...their performance was so high energy...we were dancing non-stop through most of the concert. Their performance was magnificent and I am glad I saw them perform all of their past hits as well...my college days listening to this band came back to me and they way I felt listening to them..the 80's had returned....Finally, with the headliners; The B-52's... they were certainly theatrical in the performances, singing their songs from their past albums; saving for their encore, Planet Claire and Rock Lobster.

    2 Out Of 3 Ain't Bad

by Mustafa on 2019-09-16Meridian Hall (formerly Sony Centre for the Performing Arts) - Toronto

We weren't expecting much from Berlin but they were very impressive. We were blown away by OMD, the band we really went to see. As for the B-52s well we almost left after the first couple songs but gave them a chance. They were ok but were out done by the opening acts.

    Mostly still got it

by Wayne on 2019-09-16Meridian Hall (formerly Sony Centre for the Performing Arts) - Toronto

The (formerly Sony Centre) Meridian Hall is a nice venue. It's been around for decades but still looks very nice, convenient location (near Union station and restaurants), and the sound was good. If I was going to whine about something is that I'd guess a lot of the 50-70 year old audience probably had sore feet the next day due to standing while watching the bands play on the slanted floor. Since the show/tour was celebrating music from 40 years ago, one can understand some of the performers have slowed down a step or two. Three bands was good value for the money, and it allowed the acts to focus on their A-list material. Berlin was first, they performed their hits and then some. It was a good opener. Terri Nunn, their lead singer, still sounded and looked great. She was lively and interacted with the audience. OMD was next, and really put on a great show. Andy McCluskey was funny and very active on the stage. The sounded good, my one little complaint was that they played most of their hits except for (one of my favs) Genetic Engineering. B52s finished the evening, they sounded good. Although I questioned their set order because after a couple of lively starting tunes they really mellowed it down quickly and that seemed too early and too long of a lull. The singer Fred Schneider didn't seem too active at the start of the show and then went off-stage for what seemed to be a long time (versus just staying on the stage when Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson sang). The biggest complaint I could give (and my friends had the same opinion) is that the billing should have been switched. With 2 of the 3 bands being American, and mainly doing a tour among the US, one can understand the B52s headlined. But in terms of hit songs, OMD probably had a dozen more (at least in Canada) than the gang from Athens, Georgia. In terms of energy and getting the crowd going, OMD did a much better job at it.

    40th Anniversary Tour

by Chaz on 2019-09-16Meridian Hall (formerly Sony Centre for the Performing Arts) - Toronto

Berlin and OMD were Fantastic!!! Thank goodness because I expected a lot more energy and enthusiasm from The B-52s. I was somewhat disappointed at the lack of energy from Cindy Hudson. She moved like she was injured and when she did get a burst of energy it lasted for only one song :(. I absolutely Love The B-52s so I just chalked this up to age lol. This was also the first time seeing them live. All in all, I enjoyed being there in a packed Sony Centre singing and dancing to three amazing groups celebrating 40 Years of glorious music!

    Amazing night of 80's classics

by Bman Toronto on 2019-09-16Meridian Hall (formerly Sony Centre for the Performing Arts) - Toronto

WOW! All three bands were so great! Terri Nunn is still in perfect voice and got the evening off to a great start. OMD loves Toronto and vice versa, so their set was super high energy and fun! And the B-52s are still their amazing quirky selves, with great vocals from Kate and Cindy. Loved every minute of it!
