About

THE LAST SHIP is a new musical with an original score by 16-time Grammy Award® winner Sting. Inspired by Sting’s own childhood experiences, this World Premiere production features direction by two-time Tony Award® winner Joe Mantello (Wicked), a book by Tony Award® winner John Logan(Red) and Pulitzer Prize winner Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal), and choreography by Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett (Once). THE LAST SHIP is set in the English seafaring town of Wallsend, a close-knit community where life has always revolved around the local shipyard and the hardworking men who construct magnificent vessels with tremendous pride. It is a portrait of a community so bound together by passion, faith and tradition, they'll stop at nothing to preserve the only life they've ever known.

    A Great Show!

by Anonymous on 2015-01-31Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I loved the show, and it was an added bonus seeing Sting in the cast. The venue was perfect - kind of small and it felt intimate in a way. Loved all the musical numbers. I was so sorry to hear the play was closing early, but I'm very grateful I got to see it before it closed.

    an outstanding performance

by JoInCanada on 2015-01-02Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I would recommend this show even when Sting is no longer performing in it, much as I loved his performance. The characters are loveable and down-to-earth, the story is gritty, and the songs and music outstanding. The clothing fashion and haircuts capture the era wonderfully, and even the Tyneside accents are very convincing. The script is both poignant and hilarious, and will move you from tears to laughter, and back again. I bought the CD and have listened to it over and over again. If you get the opportunity, go to see this!

    Great story

by CVLG on 2015-01-01Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I have to admit that we were drawn to the play because of Sting. We quickly realized that he was going to be a supporting player and that is exactly how it should have been. The cast was fantastic. The love story proved to be unpredictable, nice for a change. We were thrilled again the following night to see Sting and many of the cast at The Blue Note enjoying the Chris Botti show.

    Needs a lot of work

by connelly999 on 2014-12-01Neil Simon Theatre - New York

There are some nice love songs there and the female lead has a great voice. But the plot is full of holes. There is unbelievable dialogue and plot turns that leaves you shaking your head.

    So close to 5 stars

by JonBoy49 on 2014-11-23Neil Simon Theatre - New York

Having watched the special on PBS I was familiar with the basic story outline and many of the songs. From a personal perspective I'd give it 5 stars, but only rated it 4 because I couldn't help but feel that audience members without that background were having a harder time understanding what was going on - at least for the first 15 minutes or so. Can't help thinking that a simple video with a voice over (by Sting) similar to what was used in the PBS special would have set the scene so that everyone in the audience could have been prepared before the show began. Cast were brilliant and it was great to see actors who actually looked like they could really have been shipyard workers and their wives etc. All of the leads were excellent - hard to single any one of them out - just wonderful performances by all of them.

    Good, good, very good.

by deLanau1 on 2014-11-11Neil Simon Theatre - New York

Having read newspaper reviews of the Chicago and Broadway productions of THE LAST SHIP before I bought my ticket, I was expecting a good show but not necessarily a great show. I saw the production in NY mid November, and I can tell you that the production is at a very high level of quality. Music by Sting is superb -far from the usual type generally encountered on B'way-, and the lead actors (Michel Epster especially) very well cast and totally believable... and they sing!! Even the dancing, based on very basic earthy male workers movements, is fun and totally appropriate to the characters. The audience (it was a Saturday night performance) loved it too. Loved it.

    Loved this show!

by JTCanada on 2014-11-05Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I was caught off guard by how much I loved this show. The music is terrific, the story is engaging, the characters are compelling and the acting is note perfect. Whoever cast this show deserves a Tony award. Everyone associated with this fine show deserves a huge round of applause. I highly recommend it and I plan to see it again.

    The Last Ship was amazing!,

by Mimilechat on 2014-11-04Neil Simon Theatre - New York

Touching, unforgettable, beautiful cast and choreography. The voices were strong, the music was great. I really had the feeling of the play taking place in a shipyard with working class people. Loved every minute of the show.
