X-fest: Amazing bands minor logistical kinks.

by NeededMusicfix on 2014-09-03Fort Calgary - Calgary

As this is a review for X-fest I won't get bogged down in the individual bands but the over all event because the bands should change year to year. Pro: I will say that the band selection (2014) was very cool. Most of bands met or exceeded expectations live and none left me feeling disappointed. They featured A number of bands I wasn't expecting to see in the area anytime soon (Arctic Monkeys, Fitz and the Tantrums... And The SMALLS?!?! Awesome) and a fair number of big names. Con: The lines getting in and through the bag checks were sizable at times. My friends spoke of long waits the first day when I came late and breezed through getting my band and the bag check. However the next day I only needed a bag check and there was a big slow moving line. Con: Some of the ladies pointed out the port-a-potties ran out of toilet paper and some ran out of hand sanitizer. Also the washing stations ran out of water (particularly on Sunday) and worse so did most of the drinking water stations. The crowd on Saturday started off as ultra tame and just stood there. Pro: Grounds are easily accessible in town. A short walk from the city hall train platforms where all transit ends up. Not really any parking at the grounds though the Municipal lot and convention centre is also not far away (and various hotels). A lot of people used Car2Go successfully and it is right on the river pathway for walking or cycling (though the concert gets out when it is dark). The field has a very slight hill helping sight lines but it isn't anywhere close to a natural amphitheatre. Comfortable space for everyone.
