Very good, but the orchestra needs practice

by Omnisage on 2023-12-05Meridian Arts Centre: George Weston - Toronto

The orchestra is extremely talented and they have great potential. It’s hard to believe the conductor is self-taught and began his orchestral career only recently. However, as someone whose ears have been trained on hundreds of hours of classical music from various orchestras, the Mandle philharmonic has a long way to go. There were noticeable pauses when they stopped to turn their sheets. In my opinion, there were some off-key moments as well—pretty subtle, but still noticeable. Furthermore, in the fourth movement of Beethoven’s ninth, the tenor and baritone voices were almost completely drowned out by the other instruments. This was very unusual to witness, and I was pretty surprised this was not caught during the rehearsals. Once again, my criticism is probably too harsh since I’m comparing them against the best. Notwithstanding, the Mandle Philharmonic is still a pretty good orchestra. I would totally recommend them to new and experienced classical enthusiasts alike.

This is my first time attending classic music concerts. It is mind blowing compared to when you watch through YouTube or tv . I definitely will go again !

    Great seats

by Jen on 2022-09-20Meridian Arts Centre: George Weston - Toronto

Seats were fine. Sound was great from choir but they were raised. Sound from orchestra was good, but seated in cener and a wee bit higher may have made a difference. Lost the sound of soloists as they were seated/standing behind orchestra. Whoever was on Timpani was AMAZING. So animated and truly looked like he was loving every second.

    wonderful show

by anthie on 2022-09-20Meridian Arts Centre: George Weston - Toronto

loved the band and the choir, my only disappointment was about the 4 wonderful singers performing- I felt that their voice just did not project through the entire hall, I was up close and could barely hear them I would imagine it would be harder in the back. perhaps a better mic system would help

    Very good entertainment

by Stephen on 2022-09-20Meridian Arts Centre: George Weston - Toronto

I rarely go out these days, but it was nice to go and see/ hear the orchestra play. Opening with Carl Orff was a nice surprise. The venue was quite nice (Meridian Centre). The audience was a little uncultured, clapping at incorrect times (interfering with lulls in the movements), and talking too much and too often, but that's not a reflection of the performance. Prior to entry, my date and I got a drink at the bar, after being told we could bring them in. However, he was mistaken - that was not the case - , and we had to drink them very quickly, as the show was about to start (not enjoyable). Re: the performance: It is very obvious the conductor loves what he does, and the musicians are definitely world-class. I give the show a 4/5, losing one point for the drink confusion, and for the audience's interruptions. The performance itself I'd say is 4.5/5.
