McMurtry RAWKS the Park
by noizeboy on 2011-10-03Park Theatre - WINNIPEGTexas singer-songwriter James McMurtry hadn't played Winnipeg for 19 years. His return was well worth the wait. Backed by an amazingly tight and solid band he proved that even though you carry the "singer-songwriter" tag you can still rock, and rock he did. Sounding like a twangy Bruce Cockburn, McMurtry shared classics like Choctaw Bingo, Ruby And Carlos, Too Long in the Wasteland and We Can't Make It Here. For an encore he came out sans band for the beautiful Lights of Cheyenne and at the end announced he was heading for the bar to get a beer and we were welcome to join him. He immediately stepped off the front of the stage and we did join him for that well earned beverage. Let's hope he doesn't wait that long for his next visit to Manitoba!
