I had never been in this theatre before and can only imagine what it must have been like in its early days. I was impressed with the architechture as it was. We were on the first balcony and all seating is graduated so you have a good view. Our view was excellent. We were in the 2nd row in the middle. Besides a break halfway through the concert there were several times when people were standing up, dancing and clapping along. There were 5 ladies in the show altogether, each playing the part of different lady singers who have passed on (Aretha Franklin, The Chantelles, Odetta, Nina Simone, Bessie Smith). Their voices were all excellent and with the costumes, they were all very believable.
As for the lady who played Janis (Mary Bridget Davies), she absolutely nailed the performance, both vocally and in her mannerisms. It would be very easy to believe that Janis herself was on stage....right down to the (water filled) Southern Comfort bottle that you can see sitting on the table next to the chair on the right-hand side of the stage. She drank from it often too, in the same manner as Janis. We were absolutely thrilled with the performance! This show is highly recommended if you like Janis Joplin! It got rave reviews from the official reviewers too! Songs you would likely remember, if you remember any at all, would be Piece of My Heart, Me and Bobby McGee and Mercedes Benz.
