BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

African Children's Choir was founded in 1984 by Canadian human rights activist Ray Barnett, who was fascinated by the children's songs he heard while visiting Uganda. The first-ever edition of the choir toured in North America the following year to glowing reviews. Since then, the choir has made over 40 tours throughout the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom, performing in renowned venues and halls including the British House of Commons, the Pentagon, Royal Albert Hall, the London Palladium, and the International Club of Berlin. The choir features a rotating lineup of children from seven different African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and Rwanda. Its parent organization, Music For Life Institute, uses funds raised by the choir to support education and relief efforts for poverty and disease-stricken children in Africa. Throughout its career, the choir has achieved an extraordinary list of accomplishments. They have performed for world leaders including U.S. president George W. Bush, Queen Elizabeth II, and Nelson Mandela, and they have shared the stage with famous musicians including Mariah Carey, Paul McCartney, and Annie Lennox. The group was nominated for Best Gospel Choir at the 1992 Grammys, and their soundtrack contributions to films like "Hotel Rwanda" and "Blood Diamond" have been critically praised. The group's soaring harmonies, culturally rich performances, and impressive legacy continue to inspire audiences around the world.
