Fantastic Evening of Canadian Musical Talent

by tizz on 2013-08-19McMahon Stadium - Calgary

It was an amazing evening of Canadian musical talent from newcomers to legends hosted by the very funny Brent Butt. All in all a wonderful evening raising $1.5 million for flood ravaged Albertans.

Alberta Flood Aid 2013 McMahon Stadium Amazing!!!

    by 13Lucky on 2013-08-19McMahon Stadium - Calgary

There has not been a concert held outdoors at McMahon Stadium in years. Calgary should start doing this again.... The concert was amazing and all the people (attendees, volunteers, staff, ect...) were so friendly and really showed what type of city Calgary is. Great job!!!!

    Massive Effort pays off!

by Eaveshaker on 2013-08-19McMahon Stadium - Calgary

When I heard the news that a Flood Relief Concert was being organized, I immediately had to get tickets. As an event planner, musician and avid concert goer, this was right up my alley. I thought, its about time we had another go at McMahon stadium. Surely the neighbors would be OK with this special event. As far as I heard, there were no complaints from anyone in the neighborhood. There was a strong police and security presence and most people I met were responsible and very supportive of the cause. Now for the show... I was pleasantly surprised to see the events in the parking lot on our arrival. A friend of mine had mentioned on Facebook that he would be playing in the Raise the Boots stage so we arrived a little early to catch the show. The sound quality was excellent and the acts were high quality and a variety of different styles. Having local talent involved was a great idea. The food trucks were a nice touch too. It would have been nice to have a first responder display set up for the public to engage and thank the people who helped. The t-shirts and kids activities were a nice touch. I had purchased V.I.P. tickets and was instructed to go to the N.E. corner of the stadium for early entrance and to pick up our lanyards. When we arrived the was a substantial line forming so we joined in. We were disappointed that the general public gate actually opened up before the V.I.P gate. The time we got in the floor was wide open and it didn't appear V.I.P. got any special treatment. What concerned me more was the fact that I was carrying a back pack and the gate attendants and security did not ask to look at it. I walked right in after getting my lanyard, and joined the rest of the crowd. I didn't have anything to hide, but the chance of someone sneaking in alcohol, or even a weapon concerned me. This was an all ages event and there were some high profile politicians in the crowd. The P.M. and Premier were only 1 section over from me. As an event planner, this is not acceptable. Another thing that I was curious about was the placement of the stage. Why was it shifted over to one side? My seats were on the West side and I felt that i was at a disadvantage for viewing when the stage was set to the East side. Why couldn't it be set up at the other end? There seemed to be more room in front of the Red and White Club. This could have been used as a Green room. Finally, why was the event not held on Saturday August 17th? The venue was open and it could have given more artists the opportunity to play or even given the ones that participated more time. I bet Some of them were just getting warmed up, when their time was over. It would have also been easier for people that had to work on Friday. Regardless of these issues, I enjoyed the show and later found out my V.I.P. pass got us access to the floor. I don't know if this was the intention or another security slip up, but we got to watch a few of the acts up close, which was awesome. I thought there could have been more floor seats available if the food trucks and bars were moved further north, as well. The sound quality from our seats was very good, especially Johnny Reid. His style of music fit the venue and occasion quite well. When we were on the floor for Nickleback, the sound quality was a little muddy and the bottom end was very strong. A couple of times, they lost the Chad's mic and you couldn't hear him sing. Overall, I think the sound and light crews did a great job. Tara Slone was a trooper in the crowd and I appreciated her involving our native neighbours who also were affected by the floods. Brett Butt was adequate as the host. I think the crowd enjoyed Neshi when he stepped up. Maybe he should have been the host all along. Since this was a one time event, I imagine it would be hard to follow a script and have have everything flow smooth. Brett Wilson's appearance was a pleasant surprise as well. Note to organizers, Keep it local as much as possible. Promote more of the local artists. ( Hardly any press on the pre - show) Where was Terri Clark and Paul Brandt or even George Canyon and Amos Garrett? Look at the response Corb Lund recieved. Use local celebrities as hosts or intermission acts. As previously mentioned, our Mayor and Brett Wilson are well liked local celebrities that would have been great hosts. Maybe even Stephen Harper could have helped out, since he's from here and was in attendance. Also, where were our pro sports teams? No signs of any Flames or Stampeders any where. This this their house and I never saw any booths set up or players in attendance. Jann Arden in my opinion should have started the show. She's our girl and her style of music would have been a great way to ease in to the concert. I knoe Paul Dean lives in Calgary too, but I think Loverboy has always been considered a band from Vancouver. Besides they are rockers and they should have been later in the show, as the tempo increased. I really enjoyed the Sheepdogs and I was greatful to be able to see Randy Bachman as I always loved his songs. I thought Nickleback rocked the house and they were positioned perfectly to end the show. Just wish they could have played longer. Overall, I think the massive effort put forth by the organizers, performers and volunteers was AWESOME! Many thanks for stepping up and putting on the show. I was very proud and pleased that you raised so much money. ( just curious how much McMahon Stadium, the Stampeders or The Flames put into this event? Hopefully the venue was provided free and some of the concession money went to the event ) Maybe ticketmaster could email people who bought tickets a breakdown of the sponsor contributions, the final tallies from the t-shirt sales and/or other revenue. I know that there will be some expenses that are unavoidable. Not everyone can afford to donate their time or resources. To the artists and volunteers -A huge Thank you! Job well done! To the critics of sound. performance or other, grab a shovel and head to High River. There is still lots of work to be done. Be proud of what you accomplished. Be proud that we live in the greatest City in the greatest Province in the Greatest Country in the world!

The concert was EXCELLENT. It raised a lot of money . For only being a couple of months planning we thought it went off very well. The highlight was Randy Bachman for us. Hopefully this will help those who have lost so much.

    An Amazing gathering of artists

    by 01Fan on 2013-08-19McMahon Stadium - Calgary

WOW - an amazing lineup of Canadian talent that entertained the crowd for over 4 1/2 hours! Starting with Loverboy who had the crowd on their feet and dancing away to their hits to 79 year old Ian Tyson singing his country croon to the powerhouse Nickelback finishing the show with their explosive set. The artists were all quick to thank the first responders to the Calgary flood as well as those people who volunteered their time and energy to help in the cleanup of this city as well as High River and the promoters who invited them to come and share their talent in order to raise money to help the people so affected by the flood waters. They all seemed pleased to be there and enjoying themselves and humbled by the amazing response of the people of Calgary and area.

    Alberta Floodaid was fantastic!

by nachsart on 2013-08-19McMahon Stadium - Calgary

The Alberta Floodaid was a fantastic venue for raising funds for our fellow Alberta residents who suffered great losses in the floods. I really wish more of these outdoor events would be held at MacMahon stadium. We had a great time, and it feels good knowing that so much good came from it. Just think how many other fundraising causes could benefit from an event like this.

    Alberta Flood Aid

by canadiancruejunkie on 2013-08-19McMahon Stadium - Calgary

What an amazing concert. There were 8 of us and even though our seats were further back in the stadium, we could still hear and see it all. We had so much fun dancing to Tom Cochrane and Nickelback...and LOVED Corb Lund's hats off tribute to Stompin' Tom!!!! With the amazing amount of money raised to help those still in need from the floods, all of us Calgarians say a huge THANK YOU to the organizers and especially the artists for taking your time and money to help.

    Flood Concert was awsome

by SmartiePants on 2013-08-19McMahon Stadium - Calgary

My only complaint of the venue was that food kiosks were very long and then once we stood inline for 15 minutes we were told they ran out of nachos... DID THEY NOT GET THE MEMO??? THAT 30,000 people were coming!!! No excuse for running out of food items.

The overall concert was very good, it would have been better if there had been more large screens. When purchasing tickets you did not know where you where sitting in relationship to the stage. Q was quite a long way from the stage and at times hard to see the artists.

Thanks for putting on such a great show and helping out those families affect but the terrible June Flooding in Southern Alberta.
