About
Like their band name, the multi-faceted sound of British indie rockers Alt-J (∆) requires a bit of explaining. The name derives from the combination of keys that results in a delta sign (∆) on Mac computers; the sound – a combination of folk-pop, skittering polyrhythms, and soaring falsetto harmonies – results in happy critics and even happier listeners. The quartet formed in 2007 in a Leeds Metropolitan University dorm room, and the constraints of recording demos in a quiet study environment heavily influenced their hushed, intricate approach to indie rock. Their 2012 debut An Awesome Wave received the Mercury Prize, Britain’s most prestigious music award, and launched the band to indie stardom with singles “Breezeblocks” and “Fitzpleasure.” Alt-J are on tour in 2013, and ticket buyers can be sure that no matter how big the venue, the band will deliver the intimate live concert they’ve become known for.

by rajakangaroo on 2013-09-14TD Echo Beach - TorontoThe concert was beyond epic. Not only was the performance was outstanding (alt j are a very good live band), but the light show running behind them was spectacular. I was mesmerized along with the huge crowd surrounding me. And then all of the sudden, in the crux of a song, thunder boomed as if even the gods were applauding it. Lightning brought about a roar in the crowd and it grew louder and louder each time the flash of milk white light was whipped on the dark velvet sky. For a second, a sense of sorrow took over me thinking they may stop if it were To rain. But by the time they played taro, everyone was soaking wet and having the time of their lives. A great end to the show I though... But them they played breezeblocks and made the heavens cry even harder. Great arrangement Of the songs, great venue, great b atmosphere.
Rating: 1 out of 5by Anonymous on 2013-09-14TD Echo Beach - Toronto Ridiculously short set (about 45 minutes), with no encore! Even though we all braved it out in the rain, it seemed like they wanted to get out as fast as they could. They didn't even play an encore!

Rating: 5 out of 5 Alt-J @ Echo Beach (Sept. 11, 2013)
by Rachel28 on 2013-09-13TD Echo Beach - TorontoAlt-J are incredible live. Look up any footage on youtube and you know what you're in for. Their layered, intricate sound doesn't lose any depth or beauty at live shows and each band member is so focused. The music really suited the outdoor venue as well, even though the rain started coming down about half way through their set. The stage backed with lighting that was synched to each song and a fog machine provided an awesome spectacle. Overall, the only thing I could critique is the short-length of the set even though Alt-J played every song in their repertoire.
Rating: 4 out of 5by Anonymous on 2013-04-22Commadore Ballroom - Vancouver Alt-J played an awesome show! The crowd was loving it and their unique sound was cheered again and again. The one complaint I had was the show seemed relatively short ~60 minutes. I left feeling high of the crowd and the performance but felt a little ripped that the show seemed to flash by.
Rating: 3 out of 5 Alt J - worth it.
by geenanana on 2013-03-29Sound Academy - TorontoThe band was great! Alt-J do their thing very well, and the musicianship was off the hook. Their album has such a great mix of genres, and influences, they have something for everyone. I was skeptical to see them pull it off, because of all the musical layers, but they were amazing! The vocals and the timing of everything was spot on. Early show, and they kept it short and sweet ! Left wanting more! The one thing that made this experience average was the venue. And this ALWAYS seems to be an issue is the venue itself. Security was super tight, as there was still a massive lineup of people outside the venue a couple of hours past the opening door time. Sightlines are terrible at this place. And the worst part is parking. Gouging - and I mean GOUGING fans $20.00 parking for like 2 hours is ridiculous. There isn't much of an alternative there either for parking. To be honest, I would not have bought tickets if I knew it was going to end up at the sound academy because this venue downgrades the experience.
