Like their band name, the multi-faceted sound of British indie rockers Alt-J (∆) requires a bit of explaining. The name derives from the combination of keys that results in a delta sign (∆) on Mac computers; the sound – a combination of folk-pop, skittering polyrhythms, and soaring falsetto harmonies – results in happy critics and even happier listeners. The quartet formed in 2007 in a Leeds Metropolitan University dorm room, and the constraints of recording demos in a quiet study environment heavily influenced their hushed, intricate approach to indie rock. Their 2012 debut An Awesome Wave received the Mercury Prize, Britain’s most prestigious music award, and launched the band to indie stardom with singles “Breezeblocks” and “Fitzpleasure.” Alt-J are on tour in 2013, and ticket buyers can be sure that no matter how big the venue, the band will deliver the intimate live concert they’ve become known for.
Great stage show - awesome lights/effects and the sounds was good considering the venue was the Big 4.
I’ve seen alt-J before and they never disappoint. Sound quality is great, lights are amazing and they overall put on a great show. Would see these guys everyday if I could.
Alt J was really great. They sounded amazing, their light show was amazing, it was a great time. Both shows started RIGHT on time, so don't be late!
Alt J played at Reading when I saw them live. They were exceptional, the band of the festival for me. So tight, the music is mesmerising. I am certain they are even better now!
As a band alt-J has been on my playlist since 2011, to see them live for the first time was exciting and well worth my trip to Calgary. The venue - Stampede Corral - was acoustically pleasing which was a great surprise since I prefer to see bands in a smaller intimate venue. The only complaint I have regarding my experience is that the venue or it may have been a band management decision, only allowed for cash purchases for merchandise. Lines were super long for ATM and drinks.
The band all play instruments, which makes for a boring stage show as they're stuck to their microphone stands. However, the light show added the dynamics that you want in a live event. It made their songs feel alive and exciting, even thought they're just standing there. The music sounded great, but it would be nice to elaborate on the songs a bit so that it doesn't sound like it just came straight off the album. A familiar cover always gets the audience excited to see a new take on an old favorite. This was lacking. Overall, really good show and amazing lights, but not a ton more than listening to the album at home.
It was amazing. Their lightning was perfect. Loved it
I've been a fan of alt-J since almost day one. Last year's performance at the Vancouver Orpheum was one of the most amazing concerts ever. Had this week's show in Calgary been held at the Jack Singer or Jubilee, it would have been nearly as good. However, the Corral does not treat music well, and the sound technicians were incapable of recreating the sound that alt-J would like their fans to hear. As usual, the deep bass was overly loud, muddying the midrange and making parts of the concert unlistenable. So disappointing. But, if you get the chance to see and hear alt-J in a proper setting, definitely GO! Well worth the money. The opening act, San Fermin, were very original, and very talented. It was great to be introduced to them this way. (And their sound was much better.)
Alt-J put on a fantastic show. Their use of lights made the perfect ambiance to their incredible sound. Musical genius. I would definitely go again.
Light show, sound, presence, everything was awesome.
LOVE this band! Such original music. Every song is brilliant.
All I can say is it was incredible. The performance was tight, the lights were amazing and the crowd in Montreal was in their hands. Amazing night. Mikky Ekko opened and he was really great as well.
Great concert fun night out with friends; good with crowd come back to Mtl soon

This band is awesome and puts on a great show! The light show was superb and the music is great!
I experienced ALT-J at both Osheaga and Echo Beach this year. As I discovered the boys in the new year, I quickly became ingrained in their incredible sound. They are each naturally talented, and put on a wonderful show. I am thrilled to have seen them in person twice now, and will not hesitate to experience them again.
They played all their hits and jammed a little as well. Didn't even notice the rain! The lights were synced to the songs and really created a mesmerizing atmosphere. Loved the concert and would go back in a heartbeat. Highly recommended!
amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!! simply one of the best shows i've ever seen. not to mention the venue was fantastic. A+
This was the best show I've been too all summer. The performance was amazing and they sounded phenomenal.
Amazing live, needs to be longer and more personal. Vocals sound exactly like they do on the record. They need more songs so the concert can be longer. Also, encore songs! Need at least one encore song!!!!
