About

Apes of the State are an indie band from Lancaster, Pennsylvania with a sound that’s deeply rooted in punk rock, folk and bluegrass. The group comprises April Hartman, who sings and plays guitar, along with Dan Eversole on mandolin, Mollie Swartz on violin and Colin Grandstaff, who plays harmonica and sings. Hartman’s first release was 2014’s All I Did This Summer Was Go to Rehab, which documents her sobriety journey. The EP Things I Never Meant to Tell You followed in 2015 and in 2016 the band’s first recording as Apes of the State, “This City Isn’t Big Enough,” was released. Their second full-length album, Pipe Dream, was released in 2019 and introduced the band’s use of percussion and electric guitar on some of the songs. Apes of the State have performed across the country, including at the Vans Warped Tour and on TEDx stages. In 2016, Hartman and Eversole founded Second Chance to Play, an organization that helps individuals in rehab and recovery communities participate in the Lancaster music scene.
