I had the privilege of seeing Arturo Sandoval on 2 other occasions over the past 20 years, and when hearing of this gig last minute, I pounced and brought friends along. Although from out of town and not having been to Meridian before, after reading reviews online about the theatre having no bad seats, I selected the ones above/behind the stage as few remained. Mistake.
The audio was deplorable, and the rear facing monitor wasn't even on until 15min into the show, by which time I was ready to find mgmt. It didn't end there, as the sound crew were not on the ball with mic levels, and the guitar was inaudible to us for the entire show. Arturo was openly pissed as well, stopping one tune short to dress down the crew about his own mic. That's the first time I've seen that in 40 years of live music.... We got to watch the backs of the performers, and couldn't even see the rhythm section at all without standing up and craning. Pointless to have seats behind the stage IMO.... Lesson learned there.
Perhaps the most impactful part was that Arturo hardly played his horn at all, opting for vocal, keyboard and Jew's harp spotlights instead. Don't get me wrong, he is incredibly talented with these other instruments, but I was there for his trumpet prowess, solely.
Having said all that, this is an incredibly fine tuned and powerful sextet, and IMO, the sax player stole the show. I hope that next time I have a chance to catch this legend play, the audio gods look favorably upon us.
