Madeleine Peyroux Tickets

Both Martha Wainright &Madeleine Peyroux were excellent and very entertaining. My only complaint...the show was too short.

Madeline was very pitchy in her signing. I appreciated her musical timing, and the band was great! However, the opening act of Martha Wainwright had a much better singing voice.

Madeleine Peyroux’s concert had an intimate, neighbourly feel, as if we were all grouped around a campfire on a warm, summer night. She treated the audience to a special Canadian tribute, which was fun and very sweet. The mic had some technical difficulties, however, Madeleine’s beautiful voice and genuine, fun, and thoughtful demeanour came through loud and clear. I would love to see her again.

I have been a huge Madeleine Peyroux fan for many years. I love her songs and delivery. She picks interesting covers as well as great originals but I don't know what to think after seeing this concert. I'm not sure if she was drunk or something but it seemed like she was somewhere else completely. Her renditions of songs off her first record ("Don't Wait Too Long", "Dance Me to the End of Love") were slurred and her timing was off. I was thinking this was intentional but then on some songs she just stopped singing half way through and let the band wrap things up or seemed lost as to where she was in the song. I won't be going to see her again.

There are times when technical glitches can be used as a springboard to greater performance heights or hear a pin drop lows, but when you come out onstage in a distasteful diva mood don't blame your well-attired roadie and tech or your 'patiently waiting for you to come to your senses' backing band to pull you out of your less than zero stage presence and slimy attitude. Last night the non-performance of the year occurred at The Centre in Vancouver during Mme Peyroux' excruciating set. From her you paid for it so here it is number 'The Kind You Can't Afford', to the kid gloves snap of 'Don't Pick A Fight With A Poet', Mme Peyroux was uninspired, so much so when it came to her penultimate number my sister remarked: "is this a rehearsal?" She did not endear herself to this listener with backhanded and disdainful comments about the venue, her bandmates, the city, and the audience. Yes she apparently had some difficulty hearing herself during a few songs. And, she did break a guitar string which frankly did not make a difference in the lack of enthusiasm she displayed through her primary instrument, which is what the commoners paid money to hear. It became apparent her bandmates would not escape unscathed as Mme Peyroux directed her gaze to them at various points in irritation and ignorance of their musical prowess and professionalism. Despite the drummer who obligingly plugged away during Mme Peyroux' weak self-penned material, so much so it appeared he wished he was somewhere else while using his brush to scrub a sink, to her credit Mme had to acknowledge the audience's appreciation for their work thereby underlining her lack thereof. Even her attire looked as if she needed to dry out after a late night bender. The billowy pockets on her jacket which seemed like purses a middle aged woman would wear as they hung by her hips made it look as if she was passing a mirror by the front door just getting in after a bad night or in a hurry to leave. But enough of that. What was most disconcerting was the placating manner which the audience wanted not to offend the offender. I was wanting to walk out after her first number, but out of respect for the artist (or was that fear) I stayed. Too bad. I could have picked up opening act Sophie Hunger's cd and listened to someone with substance in the comfort of my mini-van. When Mme announced ''this will be my last song" there was nervous applause from the too polite Vancouver crowd, not sure if they were being set up for a further fleecing. Speaking of Sophie, she and her band stole the show with the audience clamouring for more. Her band mates were on. They all were in the moment and vested in the music, and showed how much they appreciated the connection they made with their audience. Sophie showed her fragility and strength through her work and her band augmented this admirably. I would definitely go see her and her band perform again.

The performance was solid, focusing mostly on her new album. She did not perform many older songs. She has a quirky personality, which I suppose fits with her music. The biggest problems were not with her but with the venue. The sound was not balanced, and the quality of the vocal amplification was below average. The theatre was significantly undersold, which is disappointing.

I was expecting a lot more from Madi. Too often artists use live shows as an opportunity to test all their new material. While I think it's OK to play some new music, it has to be balanced with the fans desire to hear the classics. I'm not saying it has to be all the old stuff, but Madi did not strike that balance. To make matters worse, she sings completely different 'versions'of the classics. I don't mind that per se- often they can be better than the recorded versions. In this case they are not. Fine if you want to do that- after all isn't that artistic license. Just don't be surprised if the venue ends up empty. My seat will definitely be one next time she is in Toronto. It's a shame because she is a lovely lady and makes a genuine attempt to connect with her audience. My suggestion is keep up the banter but if she focused the same energy on what her audience wanted to hear, she would get a more buoyant crowd.

The concert was really good. The only thing is that it was too short. I wish it was longer!

Great show, but could have been treated to a few more songs...concert was a little short for the money spent. Look forward to future shows by Madeleine Peyroux.

I love Madeleine's music and although there were some vocal level issues, she was very engaging and great to watch and listen to. Our seats were up close and personal in the second row.
