Great band. Love to watch them play live. Their set was a little short, under 2 hours but great energy. I really love how affordable their merchandise is- $10 for a t-shirt and/or CD is fantastic! Would have liked to see them at the Commodore more than Venue... but it was a fabulous show anyways!

    Athlete definitely acheived golden

Awesome interactive and crisp live show. Openers, "Carney" were quite the surprise, who also blew the crowd away.

    Athletic!

    by Convict81 on 2010-06-08Lee's Palace - Toronto

Quite simply put Athlete are one of the hidden gems in the world of Music! To see an act like Athlete at a venue like Lee's Palace is just something you remember forever. Yes they did only play for 70 minutes, which I will admit was disappointing, although apparently quite common in the UK so the band tells us. The show was incredible, great sound, great set list, I just do not know what else I can say about it other than if you ever get the chance to see Athlete, take it!

    What a great concert!!!

by Anonymous on 2010-06-08Lee's Palace - Toronto

It was such a fantastic concert last night. Athlete sang a nice mix of songs from new and old albums and they sounded great. I loved their energy on stage which transfered to the crowd. They sound better live than they do on the albums, and the albums are really good. I'd recommend seeing this band live to anyone, especially if you don't like crazy mosh pits but want to have a good time and sing along with the band. I will definitely come see Athlete next time they are here. Carney was the opening band. Wow, what a surprise. I knew nothing about these guys but they were outstanding. They did an hour long set of songs and the crowd loved them. These guys perform like they are the headliner and their music has a great variety. They also have some serious skills with the intruments and the front man has a great voice that spans a good range of notes.

    Carney stole the show

by paddywhack on 2010-06-08Lee's Palace - Toronto

Having seen Athlete four years ago, in what was an amazing show at the Opera House, I was looking forward to seeing them again. We arrived around 9:15pm to opening act Carney on stage. Having never seen or heard of Carney before we were completely blown away. The energy and commitment by the lead singer coupled with his amazing vocal talents was a real treat. All the other players were spot on, and played together tightly. By the time they moved into their last song the crowd was filling up and feeling the vibe of what was an amazing opening act. THere was no doubt that Athlete had a lot to do to outshine their opening counterparts. Starting with El Salvador there was a sense of hesitance and uncomfortableness, and was not the best opening song they could have chosen. Superhuman Touch and Hurricane followed, but the crowd were still reeling form Carney and Athlete seemed to be jaded and tired, lacking the energy we seen from the previous act. Things got better from here though, with West Side and One Million pulling the crowd slowly to their side, by the time Athlete stepped off anticipation had grown as to what was to come next. THe first song in the Encore was the highlight of the set for us, Rubiks Cube from the new album Black Swan, is one of those songs that you just have to see live. And were I was dissapointed with the live versions of The Getaway, Superhuman Touch and Magical Mistakes, Rubiks Cube made up for it. Athlete finished the set with their biggest hit to date "Wires", much to the delight of the crowd gathered. My wife commented that it must be such an emotional song for Joel to sing, but I believe it probably was when he first wrote and sang it, but by now I'm sure that they've played it so much it has lost some of it's original charm. Joel stayed on stage after Wires ended and the other lads walked off stage, to give the crowd one last sing song. But unfortunatley clocking in at only 1 hour 15 minutes, it was a bit of a dissapointement for a band with 4 Albums and numerous EPS. Hopefully next time the lads will be better rested.
