About

Since its formation by multi-talented musician and songwriter Aaron Bruno in 2010, AWOLNATION has redefined alternative music. With multiple radio hits at the alternative format, including 8 Top Fives and 2 Number Ones, the act has inarguably already made a permanent mark, not just in their genre, but across modern music. Most notably, the chart-topping, record-breaking, diamond-certified track "Sail" created a reference soundscape for a myriad of hits in the last decade. That song launched a career that already spans four albums. Megalithic Symphony, the platinum debut LP that also produced the gold certified "Not Your Fault" and two other Top 10 US singles. Sophomore album Run arrived in 2015, and the follow-up, Here Come The Runts, came in 2018. Then entering a creative partnership with current label Better Noise music, the band's fourth full-length album, ANGEL MINERS & THE LIGHTNING RIDERS, featuring the hit single "The Best," was released on April 24, 2020, and features collaborations with Rivers Cuomo of Weezer and Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros. In their positive review of the project, AllMusic calls it, "an energetic, fun, and compulsively listenable set that distills the best of what AWOLNATION can do: making pop-savvy, dance-friendly, alternative rock anthems that are not bound to traditional genre conventions."

That boundary breaking of genres continued in Bruno's creative calling, even more so as the world shut down in 2020. While quarantining, Bruno had the idea to celebrate music unapologetically with a team of talented friends - new and old. The result is the new album My Echo, My Shadow, My Covers and Me, a collection of unexpected yet passionately crafted covers and collaborations. Launched with the first single in January 2022, a powerful rendition of "Wind of Change," featuring Portugal the Man and Brandon Boyd of Incubus, the album also features guest performances by Beck, Rise Against, Jewel, grouplove and many others. The homage paid to each song's original artist is just as fun to dive into as the mutual respect heard in every note from both AWOLNATION and guests.

    Awolnation was absolutely amazing!

by MrsPacker on 2012-04-04West End Cultural Centre - Winnipeg

The only reason I gave this 4 stars is because the WECC was not serving alcohol at this concert. We were told by someone that was because all ages were admitted. I have been to all ages concerts before and they can still serve alcohol. I took my hubby and my sis with me and I was the one super excited for the concert and they kept tell me to calm down. After the concert they were the ones that needed calming down. My sis fell head over heels in love with Aaron! And my husband just couldn't believe that a band this good is not bigger than it is.

2 days later I'm still deaf, and if that was the last thing I got to hear, then I'll be one happy mute.

    Awolnation was electric and entertaining

by djmcgoo on 2012-04-04West End Cultural Centre - Winnipeg

Awolnation knows how to put on an enjoyable show and did not disappoint. They got the crowd involved and since it was such a small venue & crowd it was easy to get close to the stage. Best value concert I have gone to in a very long time.

Rocked the WECC on a Sunday night

by mchlmack on 2012-04-04West End Cultural Centre - Winnipeg

Love their album, so I had high expectations for this show and they did not disappoint. Excellent musicians, charismatic frontman, this band is so much more than Sail - check 'em out while they're still playing the small venue circuit.

Aaron Bruno puts on an amazing show

by AwolFan on 2012-04-03West End Cultural Centre - Winnipeg

I first heard about AWOLNATION from my brother, and immediately loved the music. Bought the album, I highly recommend it. They played all the music I wanted to hear except for "Wake Up". The opener was mediocre at best, but for $21.50 this show was a steal. Stood the whole time (not much else you can do at the WECC). The whole band had amazing stage presence, and Bruno really involved the crowd as well as the other band members. There were a couple of minor technical difficulties such as a faulty guitar (and the one band member kinda made it obvious haha), a loose microphone stand (when Bruno took over the drums, the mic swivelled and pointed downwards.. Seeing his face and the his head cocked sideways was hilarious, still sung it out like a champ), and at one point there was some feedback or something. It just added to the experience of the show, the difficulties were more funny than anything else, and the whole band was visibly having a good time. Amazing show, amazing music. Hopefully when they come back they get a bigger venue and a bigger crowd.

Awolnation & USS - Just OK

by avidconcertgoer2011 on 2011-12-28Sound Academy - Toronto, ON

    - Lots of drunk and violent guys in the crowd. - Venue is subpar. - Too much time in between bands. - Long lines for drinks. - Average performances and sound. - Everyone left after Awolnation played 'Sail,' and they were only about 1/2 - 3/4 done their set. For the price it was a good night out, but I wouldn't pay anything more than the $22 I did. Would not see USS or Awol again.

    Awolnation & USS rocked!!

by SweetJane on 2011-12-17Sound Academy - Toronto

The two headlining acts were fantastic. I originally bought the tickets because I love Awolnation but USS totally blew me away. I had not heard much of their stuff before but both these bands were incredible live. The two opening bands (Pack A.D. and Dinosaur Bones) were kind of boring but overall it was a great night. I do not think I would ever go back to Sound Academy though. My feet were stepped on about 20 times, I was constantly elbowed and I had a drink spilled on me. I also was too short to see most of the show, I had way too many tall guys in front of me.

    Aaron tore it up!

by starangel on 2011-10-09Sound Academy - Toronto

Epic show! I am shocked they can pull of their sound live. I was actually not expecting it to be that amazing given how polished the album is production wise. And although on some of the tracks, it sounds like there is a lo-fi effect on Aaron's voice, he still pulled it off live!! - his voice is pretty raspy live - sooo hott!! And I am fairly certain Kenny was not adding anything (unless the mic was preset). Given the tracks (the raspy voice and shouted choruses) I am actually shocked he can sing as long as he did - that's fckign stamina. The guyz are amazing! - the drummer is wicked - and although Sound Academy has SHIT acoustics they actually sounded great so hats off their sound guy as well!

    excellent venue, weak performance

    by 1l3k2j3k4l2k3j43k2l3k4j on 2011-10-08Sound Academy - Toronto

Sound Academy grounds were great. Still not the former glory of The Docks they used to be, but impressive nonetheless. Funny enough, even the tickets were sold out at 2 out of 3 outlets a month in advance, there were still tickets at the door. Besides the very loud sound, the main complaint was about the quality of the performers. The warm up bands (both of them) were screaming to make an impression, but forgot about the music. The Awolnation started at 10pm, and they did a very cool LED annogram. But that's pretty much it. The performance was a bit uninspired, and of little musical value. Still, a live performance counts for something, so you may go out and check it. You'll probably get more kicks out of smoozing with all the other patrons, but just don't expect a musical performance carrying any resemblance to their iTunes album.

    Greatest Concert of the year.

by bioforce on 2011-10-08Sound Academy - Toronto

Awolnation put on a phenomonal show, best of the year, probably top 2 for best concert I've ever been two, the crowd was great, they were into it but not overly violent.
