About

B.B. King is in his late 80s, but the King of Blues is still on stage with his band and his famous guitar Lucille more than 100 nights a year -- a tour schedule that would tax many artists a quarter of his age. He's without a doubt the most well-known and successful living blues artist in the world. A Mississippi native, Riley B. King first built his reputation while working as a DJ, guitarist and jingle writer at the legendary radio station WDIA in Memphis, where he was known as "Blues Boy King" -- a nickname that was later shortened to B.B. He recorded his first album in 1949, and has released more than 50 albums since that have yielded popular songs like "The Thrill is Gone," "Three O'Clock Blues," and "You Upset Me Baby." King, a 1987 inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is known for his precise and sparse guitar style in which he plays individual strings instead of chords, coaxing his unmistakable sound by bending and holding notes. Today he plays concerts sitting down because of his diabetic condition, but that doesn't stop fans from scooping up tickets to see this still-vital living legend who influenced guitarists ranging from Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton to John Mayer and Derek Trucks.

B.B.King only gets better with age !

by Empressario on 2012-06-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Over the years my wife and I have had the privilege to see the legendary BB King and his stellar ensemble live at the NAC many times, and I can assure you that he is still very much a crowd pleaser. The format of the show may have changed over the past few decades, but he and Lucille can still hit those notes, and at 86 years young his sound is as solid as ever despite some negative commentary one may read in other mainstream media reviews. What all the critics out there often overlook is that Mr. King still tours not because he has to but because he loves what he does, and this is clear from his performance from start to finish. If someone goes to a show expecting him to perform the way he had back in the 70’s they probably would be better off attending a Justin Bieber concert, and give their tickets to someone who would truly appreciate the opportunity to witness one of the last true Mississippi Bluesmen perform. These days, his set list may not come close to covering the entire ‘greatest hits’ catalogue by any means, but what he does dish out is pure gold intertwined with lots of audience interaction and narrative. For those in attendance, this not only entertains, but establishing a more intimate connection, even in the larger more impersonal venues. To top off the evening, he will often toss out guitar picks and sign autographs right from the stage for his fans. Definitely a class act all the way, and one show not to be missed !

My bucket list has one less thing on it!!!!! I am not sure what people were expecting!!?? This is a legend!! BB King tours all year round!! He is in his late eighties!!! His set was short, and yes for the money I guess expectations were high. My expectation was to see the legend BB King!! goal accomplished!! I was not planning on a huge over-the-top show. I heard BB King play his "Lucille" !!! I heard BB King play & sing my favourite gone!! "The Thrill Is Gone" !!!! nuff said!! I was honoured to have seen the greatest blues guy!!

    BB IS SLOWING DOWN

by windsor51 on 2012-06-14Fox Theatre Detroit - Detroit

Went to see BB King at the Fox Theatre in Detroit on 23 May 2012. The venue is wonderful. There were so many people taking photos of the venue before BB came on stage. His special guest was Thornetta Davis. I had not seen her ever and she just brought the place to life. She has spirit and can belt out a song! A real contrast to BB's show. He is slowing down. I have seen him twice before. Once about 15 yrs. ago and again about 7 yrs ago. You can really see a difference in hs performance. He doesn't sing as much as you would like but I will say he still can play Lucille in his sleep! I went with my sister for her BD and we both agreed even before the concert that BB is getting up there and we might not have another opportunity to see him again. That was one of the reasons we attended. BB loves to perform! That was evident and even though he can't kick it out like he used to he is a blues icon. He has transcended other genres and is admired by and has inspired lots of artists and has made his mark on the music industry for all time. A shout out to his band as they sounded great as usual.

    BB King - Casino Rama

by JBLuvah on 2012-06-14Casino Rama - Rama

The old guy still has it and can still play and belt out those tunes!! He has a wonderfully funny sense of humor. The crowd was VERY into it and people from twenties to 80's were there. LOVED it - although because of his advanced age, the only downfall was that the concert wasn't long enough.

    Maybe it's time he retired

by Cotket on 2012-06-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I was disappointed. The crowd was super enthusiastic, so it was obvious that Mr. King had given many outstanding performances in the past, but I did not feel this was one. His band was amazing and when he sang he was great. Unfortunately, he spent a lot of time talking when I wanted to listen to music. The concert kind of petered out and a lot of the audience did not even know when it ended.

    Sound quality HUGE disappointment

by HappyCanadian on 2012-06-14Fox Theatre Detroit - Detroit

BB King was a good performer. His opening act was very good! My husband's review also was negative. We are baby boomers who used to enjoy going to all kinds of concerts ie. last yr alone, Paul McCartney , Aerosmith, Moody Blues. We do enjoy LOUD music.....despite that we felt this was ridiculous for this type of concert!!!!. When the intial notes BLASTED the audience, we knew right in the first 5 seconds this was going to be unpleasant. Our guest also was not happy. He had not been to a concert in years...he was excited....He will NOT be returning. People leaving the concert were complaining....we asked around as we exited. You are driving your paying customers away. For every 10 concerts we go to , our kids attend one! So rethink your target market's volume level of pleasure! BB King - not a great concert

by JoniDoll on 2012-06-14Casino Rama - Rama

To be honest, I have never seen such a poor performance anywhere. As much as BB King still has a strong voice and is a charming entertainer, his perrformance was very disappointing. At 86, I think it is time he took a look at retirement.

BB King is the Real Blues

by Ariannah on 2012-06-14Casino Rama - Rama

There are many acts that call themselves "Blues" but BB King is one of the few great authentic bluesmen left. Each note is filled with heart and the experience of 86 years. There is no flash, just honesty. As many elder statesmen do, BB will occasionally take liberty with a story or two. This particular concert was almost solidly music though. What a treat!

    BB King was weak

by bluespicker on 2012-06-14Casino Rama - Rama

The concert consisted of listening to an old man tell us how old he was, lapses of continuity in songs during which he sat looking confused as did his band. I think that BB should use his huge drawing power to feature young talented artists doing BB King songs to help them on their way up. BB could throw in a lick or two but at least there would be a lead soloist who remembers the words and where he is in the song. He did a bluesy rendition of 'You are my Sunshine' consisting of the chorus and one verse repeated over and over with huge lapses of anything cohesive in between. I can think of at least 8 verses to that song. It saddened my group to see him so forgetful and feeble while still having such a stage presence. Time to retire and no shame in it.

    Did not meet expectations

    by piglet46 on 2012-06-14Casino Rama - Rama

My husband and I were looking forward to this event. We were disappoointed that BB King did not play more of his songs. Also he appeared to have forgotten words. When he did play it was unforgettable, as he has not lost his touch, but the overall experience did not meet our expectations.

    BB King in the flesh

by Ferda on 2012-06-14Casino Rama - Rama

I was very looking forward to the concert as I have enjoyed his music for years. Concert I am sorry to say was disappointing in that I had expected a vocalist number one. Considering his age I understood it would be difficult for him to carry a full concert but rather than having a vocalist he filled in with a lot of dialogue and audience participation, twice to the same song.On the positive side, I can say that I saw BB King live! Also his voice was incredible when he did sing. The concert itself ran just over an hour and during that time he introduced his band members individually with comments about each one. He introduced a young child, guessing his grand daughter or great grand daughter, all nice but used time when you consider the total concert time. Fabulous band, incredible sound and wonderful to actually see the man live but as a concert not something I would recommend as a good return for the cost.

B.B. King's Still the King of Blues

by VocalDynamo on 2012-06-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Even at age 84, the man plays a mean guitar....if only he played longer! He engaged the audience, especially a young girl who was sitting in the front row. There was a lot of chatting, when we wanted more singing the blues! He is a very giving musician and you could tell his musicians love and respect him. We loved the show, but he performed for exactly 90 minutes so we knew it was what he does...after all he is 84 and still singing the blues!!!

    What to say

    by REED19 on 2012-06-14Casino Rama - Rama

BB King is still the most amazing blues artist around, I took a friend who has no knowledge of blues. Matter of fact when I asked if she wanted to go to the concert, she said "who is BB King?" She thought it was the best concert she's ever been to.

    BB King disappoints in Ottawa

by ticketgod on 2012-06-13National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

First of all, I have always loved BB King and have seen literally all of his Ottawa area appearances in the past 30 years as well a few shows in Toronto. So... having seen BB so many times over the years I have learned to expect a little less each time out in terms of show duration... BB's getting on after all. But his recent show at the NAC had him on stage for less than an hour with the last 15 minutes having him grumpily sign autographs from his chair at the centre of the stage. It was a real turn off and I heard a number of nearby regular concert-goers complaining about the experience and expressing their disappointment. BB also played the outrageous "Curfew" card to justify his early exit from the NAC stage, something he had the audacity to do in the 90's during a show at the Corel Centre (Now known as Scotiabank Place). It was just plain embarassing. Can he still play and sing? Sure. Are we getting value? Not a chance. Hate to state the obvious but it's time for BB and Lucille to retire.
