BADBADNOTGOOD IN CONCERT:

Canadian jazz trio BadBadNotGood have quickly earned a place at the genre's vanguard with their atmospheric, hip hop-tinged compositions. The band's unique post-bop sound incorporates live drums, synthesizers, and programmed beats, and it all comes together perfectly at their electrifying live shows. Whether they're improvising on the fly or building up layers of texture on the moody single "CS60", BBNG's musicianship and passion always make for a truly jaw-dropping live experience.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

BadBadNotGood was formed in 2010 by three members of the Humber College jazz program in Toronto. Featuring Chester Hansen on bass, Alexander Sowinski on drums and sampler, and Matthew Tavares on keyboards, the trio got their start posting unique covers of their hip hop idols on YouTube. BBNG's jazz tribute to LA hip hop collective Odd Future caught the eye of founding member Tyler the Creator, who gave the group a boost by helping the video go viral. Their debut album BBNG was released on Bandcamp in 2011, earning critical praise with unique covers of songs by A Tribe Called Quest, Waka Flocka Flame, and Odd Future. Sophomore album BBNG2 earned similar acclaim the following year for its imaginative covers of tracks by Kanye West, James Blake, and Feist. In addition to acting as the house band at Coachella in 2012, BBNG has opened for jazz legend Roy Ayers, collaborated with Earl Sweatshirt, and headlined shows around the country. Following the 2014 release of their third album III, BBNG has ticket buyers around the world eagerly awaiting their next round of tour dates.

The venue, the band, the singer baby rose and the openers were amazing! We had a wonderful time soaking in all those tunes and hope to do it again.

It was amazing! I personally loved it. I wish the crowd was more engaging with the opening acts and I don’t know why people were moshing lmao

I thought the music was amazing. First jazz concert I've been to. I'm not sure what the audience was expecting, though; heard a lot of chatting during solos. Maybe they weren't expecting a jazz concert?

  • Irresponsible

It’s hard to imagine that this show took place with record high numbers in the province. This shows how uncarring Evenko is towards their customers and how irresponsible were everyone involved in moving forwards with that concert. Putting everyone’s health at risk for simple profit is proof that Evenko just don’t care about you.

  • I went to a concert!

Huzzah! Musicianship's not dead! (And never have I seen so many Gen Zs at a jazz show.)

  • Medium

Saw the second show in Vancouver and thought the show was medium... very straightforward set, energy was medium too!

  • Seats overtaking available standing room

by kels on 2021-12-16Commodore Ballroom - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

For an instrumentally focussed band, it would have been nicer to ditch the front/centre seating and just have standing room to be able to watch closerup.

  • Killer Show

by Vikas Sharma on 2021-12-16Commodore Ballroom - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

It was my first time going to the Commodore Ballroom - and the venue is amazing! The show was everything I expected as I'd seen them once before at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto, but the venue here in Vancouver was much better. These guys have stepped up their game on the musical presentation side. Great job!
