Ballet Hispanico in Dona Peron
A portrait of power: Dona Peron brings Evita's emotional story to life.
Performed by New York-based Ballet Hispanico and with live music, Dona Peron has delighted audiences across North America since its 2022 premiere.
Alberta Ballet is pleased to welcome guest company Ballet Hispanico in Dona Peron, a complex and moving portrait of Eva "Evita" Peron, Argentina's most controversial first lady.
The extremes of power - working class struggle versus high-class opulence - are at play throughout Evita's life story. Having risen from a shameful past as a dancehall girl to become an influential political figure, she is best known for her activism, championing rights for descamidsados ("the shirtless ones" or working-class laborers).
Choreographer Annebelle Lopez Ochoa (also the choreographer of Alberta Ballet's BOTERO from the 22-23 season) offers new voice to the complex story of a beloved and controversial icon and beautifully infuses ballet with tango in a stunning contemporary work.
"She's not a fairytale character, she's not a literary character. She's a real woman, and for me, it's interesting to put her on stage because she's difficult to pin point. I want to give female dancers real roles, not always the nice roles."

I had seen the musical Evita at the NAC and now the dance performance of Dona Peron by Ballet Hispanico. What most impacted and wonderfully surprised me was that Eva Peron was interpreted by a beautiful "morena with dark hair"
An important story beautifully, fluidly told. A nuanced examination of the monumental legacy that surrounds Eva Péron. Who is remembered, and how ? Loved the paperless program. A better-placed display of the QR code in the lobby would be helpful. (Just before ticket scanning, when the line is halted anyway would make sense to me)
The dancing and dancers were technically VERY sound. Their movement was a pleasure to watch. However, I found the dancing itself to be repetitive. Also, given my experience of Latin dancing, I thought the choreography would be more energetic and less theatrical.
Love the performance , I only wish they had distributed an biography or something of that sort at the entrance of the performance, so I could follow the different circumstances of her life . I googled after and then all the dances made more sense . But overall a great performance. Love the diversity and enthusiasm of the dancers.
One of the best dance productions I have seen in years. Staging and choreography very innovative. Dance movements fluid and exquisite. Evocative storytelling with minimum rolling around on the floor.
Pure perfection. The production was impeccable, the execution was unreal and the dancers were very talented! A+ would definitely recommend, it kept us on the edge of our seat! Koodos to the choreographer! What a story!
