The music was amazing. This was a treat for my Father's 85th birthday, he enjoyed it tremendously judging by the stories he told that were sparked by the music.
I was, however, disappointed in the presentation of the event. The "battle" rules and regs were not explained so that the audience could understand; rather vague. The criteria that the judges used to evaluate the bands were not presented. The event was not well promoted judging by the crowd capacity.
Suggestions:
1. Promote thru a radio station sponsorship.
2. Have a radio announcer/broadcaster as the emcee. The organiser seemed to wing his presentation; not well prepared. They spoke of a traditional "fight". It wasn't a fight, but rather a Battle of the Bands.
3. Show a rating scale at intermission, giving the audience an idea how they stand.
4. Have rating cards for the audience to participate, and follow the band's progress.
5. Promotion by the internet for this particular age group is not sufficient. How many seniors are active on the web??
6. The City of Ottawa hosts Big Band dances in the summer; & several night clubs host such weekly events as well. Were there tickets donated at these events to promote the "Battle"? The Ottawa-Gatineau Musicians Assocaition could also have been involved. Opportunities missed!
7. Tie in this event next year with the Jazz Festival; share the resources.
8. Have the emcee step in every now and then to explain the criteria of evaluation. They only spoke at the beginning and the end of the evening.
This is the first year for this event, several kinks need to be addressed to surpass expectations next year. Don't give up, fix it; make it right!
