Battle of the Bands a classic! a must!

by NANIE on 2009-07-14National Arts Centre - Ottawa

My boyfriend and I say the battle of the band yesterday night and even if we were the youngest couple in the audience we didn't regret at all our decision! My boyfriend is not involved too much into shows and culture, when i propose to see this show at first he tought i was kidding but then he accepted, he was even more impress than i was...the guys on stage were funny and the sound was great and a lot of great memories came along the evening. next time they are back don't miss this show it's really worth it! We had a wonderful evening!

    BEST OF THE BIG BANDS

by tibill on 2009-07-14National Arts Centre - Ottawa

It was a masterful "tour de force" re-creating a "Batlle of the Big Bands" from the World War II era, and who better to do it than the Glen Miller Band - vs - The Harry James Orchestra. The show had all the elements of those ballroom moments of that era more than 60 years ago; including three judges who ultimately settled on the Harry James group as winner of the "battle". Predictably, the very vast majority of audience members were "seniors" - (For those who still had hair...it was mostly of the platinum blond variety as someone remarked). Both orchestras played as well as, perhaps better than the originals due in no large measure no doubt to the ageing quality of the 60 RPM recordings from which we remember the late Capt. Miller and the playboy debonair, Mr. James.

    Jazz "no thank you"

by sweepea on 2009-07-14National Arts Centre - Ottawa

I did enjoy Glen Miller's Orchestra and the melancholic melodies they were playing. Fantastic. As for Harry James Orchestra I thought it was too jazzy for me and was glad he was finished at the end. The jazzy horn blowing ... not for me, gave me a headache. Would go back in a heart beat if only Glen Miller.
