Beauty & the Beast - a joyful experience for all

by Maylyn on 2012-11-05National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I didn't know what to expect assuming the play would cater to the younger children but it was very well done, great singing and a lot of comedy. We all enjoyed the experience - young and old. I didn't think it was necessary for an intermission.

Love opens the eyes to a closed heart

by goladygo on 2012-11-05National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Truly magical play that shows that true love grows deep into the heart and when we are ready to receive love, love shows up in awe-mazing ways.

Beauty and the Beast was great!

by Anonymous on 2012-11-05National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It started out kind of slow but ended up being great. I wouldn't recommend bringing children to such a late show (8-11pm) though as there were a few of them crying during the performance. There are afternoon shows which would be better for them. Overall it was a great show!

Captures the spirit of the movie

by Mike42 on 2012-11-05National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The costumes, scenery, and colour palette admirably re-create the feel of Disney's movie version of Beauty and the Beast.. The actress playing Belle was a fantastic singer and was definitely the heart of the show. I found the actors playing the key roles of the Beast's servants to speak a bit too quickly sometimes and their dialogue sometimes hard to process because the scene had already moved on. The script is not too deep, but still hits some intense, if expected, emotional notes in the final scenes.

    Magical

by Party on 2012-11-04National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The play was magical and told the story perfectly. The music and theatrics were perfect especially when the beast turned into a human again. Loved it!!!

    Too Disney-ish

by TheatreBuff45 on 2012-11-04National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Unfortunately I found this play too "Disney"ed up: extravagant sets, some excessive costumes and so much overacting. Lumiere shone in his role, and Belle was the runner-up. However the rest of the cast exaggerated their roles to the extent that it was a bit annoying if not distracting. Their antics drew laughs from the very young children in the crowd, but for the theatre-goer this was not a great performance. The dancing was EXCELLENT. I did not recommend this performance to my fellow theatre buffs.

Don't prepare to be blown away

by GoodE2Shoes on 2012-11-04National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Belle was fabulous, she had the perfect Disney princess voice! The Beast had a beautiful singing voice, but the dialogue was quite whiny and childlike and a little over the top. Gaston was fabulous as well. It was difficult to hear exactly what the characters were saying and if I didn't know the Disney movie very well I would not understand the storyline at all. I kept wanting to turn up the volume so I could hear better. All in all, a great show to bring the kids to, but not an outstanding musical.

Beauty and the Beast - a blast!

by RonT on 2012-11-03National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Our whole family went to the NAC Ottawa to see Beauty and the Beast; it was, quite simply, a wonderfully unique and enjoyable spectacle to attend on any, far less a Thursday evening. Right from the start, we were totally enraptured and delighted with the scenery, dialogue and, of course, the infectious music. I knew my son was enjoing it given his frequent and genuine laughter from two seats away; as for my wife and I, we actually held each other's hands in acknowledgement of the slow growing and final love bonding between B and the B. The major leads in the production (Belle, the Beast, Gaston and indeed others in the cast) were strong, engaging and entrancing; the sound, even the lower voiced dialogues, was clear and totally discernible. As for the major production numbers, ie. "Be our Guest" et al, they were so magnificantly professional we were still happily humming them on the way home! All in all: a superb and warming show! We would gladly go again!

    Beauty and the Beast

by GiGi5 on 2012-11-03National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Having seen the original in 1996 at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto, this production does not even begin to compare to that one or the original movie. I brought my daughter who was 6 in 1996 to relive a part of her childhood she cherished so much. Having seen the original that was so spectacular and detailed exactly as the film is portrayed, my now 22 year old was so disapointed and we wanted to leave at intermission. We have vast Broadway show venues that we've seen in New York, Toronto and Ottawa and by far this production was the worst reproduction of the original ever seen. We did not leave because my 11 year old daughter wanted to stay for the experience. She is not a big fan of the movie but does enjoy broadway shows. She enjoyed the produciton but for myself and my oldest daughter who have seen the movie at least over 200 times since my 22 year old had been 2 years old, this production was disapointing at the very least and I wanted to ask for my money back. We did see the travelling version of Mama Mia and even though having seen the original in Toronto, it did at least meet expectations and not disapoint as much as this production has. If you are very familiar with the original Broadway production and the movie I suggest you do not go see this production!

Beauty and the Beast - Phenomenal

by Anyi on 2012-11-02National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I really enjoyed Beauty and the Beast. From the first scene, I was hooked. Great performances. They did the Disney animation justice. Great orchestra and wonderful collaboration from both the talent and crew. It was truly sublime.
