I love me a banjo so when i saw this show advertised i had to go. I thought i wanted to learn how to play, but now that i've seen them play - it looks WAY too hard! Because they are amazing! I was sitting there thinking, 'This is their life? playing banjos together and singing songs??" and i think i'll plan to start playing banjo at a younger age in my next life! ;)

Bela Fleck and The Africa Project was the finest concert that I have attended in my 50 years on the planet. Up to last night, the all-time greatest concert I saw was Sonny Terry And Brownie Macgee at the Beacon Arms Hotel in 1977. The torch has passed! Bela Fleck and the Africa Project is the greatest concert I have ever seen.

A very enjoyable show overall. Bela Fleck African project was very enlightning and I had the opportunity to learn about a music culture that I previously i knew nothing about. The venue was just fantastic for the type of music. Bela presented it in a way that was up close and personal

Fleck has elevated the banjo from the Beverly Hillbillies to Carnegie Hall. Earl Scruggs would be proud. Who woulda thunk that you could write a catchy concerto for banjo, tabla and double bass? My 20 year old son who is studying jazz at Capilano felt the same. This is one of the rare occasions where our musical tastes overlap.

The banjo, the stand-up bass and the tabla certainly make for an unconventional trio. But unconventional is only one adjective that fits an evening with Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and Zakir Hussein. The words magical, divine, perfect, fabulous, fantastic and marvelous certainly come to mind. I have known for awhile that Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer are fabulous musicians who can play absolutely anything. You have never heard a banjo or a stand-up bass produce the kinds of music and sounds that these two bring forth. Add their technical mastery, easy sense of humor, and a musical sense that allows them to break all traditions and boundaries, not only of their instruments but of the various musical genres that they use as building blocks for their unique compositions, and you have an evening of absolutely original and beautiful music like no one else can create,. Together they are an unforgettable duo. I know this because since discovering these two magicians, I have bought as many of their CDs playing together, or with other people, that I can afford. I had heard both Fleck and Meyer at different venues playing with othe people. This was the first time I heard them live together and they certainly exceeded all my expectations. These two have another exceptional talent in that they attract other fabulous musicians to play with. The addition of Zakir Hussain was a stroke of genius. Hussain is amazing. I watched and listened absolutely spellbound to his solos as his hands flew over the drums so fast that they became almost invisible. These three great geniuses together created an evening of pure magic. It was a privilege to be there. They sounded great together, and each displayed their mastery of their own instruments in spell-binding solos. I only have two quibbles with their performance October 24 at the Chan Centre in VAncouver, B.C. The first is that Fleck also seemed to be taking more of a backup role throughout the concert. While I enjoyed the many solos that Meyer and Hussein performed, I wanted to hear more solos from Fleck. The other quibble is that there were no CDs for sale at the event, because I longed to take this beautiful music home and listen to it over and over again. Now I have to wait for Amazon to get it to my door. I learned at intermission, later confirmed by a note on Fleck's twitter, that Hussain had just lost his mother. I would like to convey to him my deepest sympathy and thank him for his his courage in making sure the show went on. His perfomance was absolutely stellar, which, under the circumstances, is particularly remarkable. These tree are not to be missed. They all move around quite a bit, playing with all sorts of other people. One thing you are guaranteed is that they will be fabulous, and whoever is playing with them will also be fabulous.

BELA FLECK / ZAKIR HUSSAIN / EDGAR MEYER - a truly memorable concert with three musicians combining beautifully in all their pieces (except the solos). They obviously enjoy each other's company and the rapport between them was excellent even when they weren't playing. Zakir Hussain used a hammer to tune his drums and Bela Fleck later mockingly tuned his banjo with the same hammer.

This unusual fusion of banjo, tablas, and double bass revealed the mastery of the musicians, individually and as collaborators, as they created a new, almost sui generis music! The evening was a timeless auditory blessing for the audience. I am most grateful!

Three of the best doing what they obviously enjoy and do best. The two set concert built and amazed to a wonderful finale. If you get a chance, don't miss them - ever!

It was a true virtuostic treat to have been in the audience to hear Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer and Zakir Hussain. Concerts like this don't come often enough, and it was music that was fulfilling to the human spirit...
