  • Charming snakes out of baskets we never knew existed

by Retinol Burn on 2025-10-15Commodore Ballroom - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

“Where were you?!” and “We missed you so!” clamoured the crowd to an unfazed, humorous and playful as ever band - what an evening this was! Radically creative and inspiring, a joyous dizzy romp rotating through uncountable instruments, weaving a tapestry of sounds so compelling that stiff bodies started moving and smiles growing on even the most stoic of faces. Now I get it why the albums I had previously deemed exquisite were deprecated by the band - they really are unfinished. Listening to their full scope live has me now hungry for rerecordings. Thanks for a magical evening - you truly are the alpha and the omega, Beta Band!

  • Cathartic, Triumphant, Joyful, and Fun

I'd waited a long time for this, and no doubt many others had too. Right from entering the venue there was a sense of togetherness - of community. Sadly often missing in our day to day lives in these divisive times. The DJ set was a great warm up, the montage was perfect in so many ways. Bowie an inspired choice. Then the show itself. I hadn't really considering just how damn complex these songs I know so well would be to pull off live. The glorious mashing of rhythms, almost mantra-like lyrics, all the little "oh they played that bit"moments. It really was everything I'd hoped for and more. The crowd was impeccable and knew our role, cheer, chant, sing, and bear witness. There were tears around me during Dry the Rain, and how could there not be? Leaving the venue there was joy, the collective sense of having witnessed something wonderful, an experience we'd all share and take back into our corners of the world. Thank you John, Richard, Robin, and Steve. You've given me the wonderful opportunity to try and explain your music, and that experience to anyone who will listen - and probably a few that won't :)
