  • BILL FRISELL PLAYS LENNON

Fantastic! Truthfully, the Lennon disc hasn't done much for me; but, as usualy, catching it live is always better

It was really awesome. Lennon music in a whole new aspect.

  • Molvaer bombs but Frisel scores!

by yaku on 2010-06-29The Centre In Vancouver For Performing Arts - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Nils P Molvaer opened for Bill Frisell. Molvaer was a disappointment. Far too much fiddling about with gear and what I assumed was a laptop on the side table. It seemed like both M and his bassist were trying to repair something as they leaned over bent down and poked about. When Molvaer lifted the trumpet up and blew backwards sending a spray spittle through the poorly lit stage it seemed to confirm that there was a problem being repaired. No, the only problem for me was that the magnificence of the trumpet was sparsely shared through the far too long discordant exploration. Fortunately I can retreat to the stunning sounds that mark his recorded works. But Hooray for Bill Frisell! WOW WOW- a fine trio sharing surprises, smiles and delights on stage and into the audience.

  • Frisell/Molvaer, both stunning

Bill Frisell is my favourite musician and he never disappoints in concert, whether he has one person with him or five. But the surprise of the evening was the Nils Petter Molvaer trio. The music was wonderful, varied and masterfully played by all the trio members. The range of sounds the bassist got from his instrument was stunning. Thanks to the Jazz Society for bringing new acts from different parts of the world.

  • Great night

The opening act was like having a hangover on the moon. Bill Frisell was unforgettable. His music kind of sneaks up on you. From originals to folk songs to unlikely pop tunes he moves the audience from joy to sadness to laughter. His unique harmonic sense is surprising without being self-conscious and having the talented Eyvind Kang must give hope to jazz violists everywhere.
