  • Billy Flat

I had been looking forward to this show for a long time but found this performance lacking. The energy from the cast just wasn't there and there was no excitement about anyone's performance on stage. I felt that Billy yelled all his lines and the one time I expected to be blown away was when he danced for the National Ballet School. It all seemed too controlled instead of dancing with abandon. This was his "chance". There were many times in the show where there were awkward silences and pauses for no reason, almost like a local production where people are trying to remember their lines . I didn't expect that from a professional touring show. I felt like the cast just wanted it to be over. I grew up close to where this show is set. In fact my Dad went to the Chorrister School at Durham Cathedral so I understood the language and the politics of the time. That made it entertaining for me but I expected to be blown away with the music and dance as well. I was disappointed and came away saddened instead of feeling triumph in Billy's accomplishment. Hope that other performances were and will be better. It is a high ticket price to pay.

  • Disappointed

Unmemorable songs and less than stellar performances. The plot and accompanying scenes were made to be satiric, (which in the original story was not the case), and they came off as simply being cheesy.

  • Billy Elliot was amazing

I just loved the whole show. It had my attention at every moment. I really liked Billy and his relationship with his family and ballet teacher. It made me think of how hard life would be if you were on strike for over a year and the hardships for not just the strikers but everyone. It made feel like I was there. The characters were great. There were so many moments where I laughed and moments where I cried. We were all rooting for Billy to succeed.

Found the voices weak, unable to hear parts of the performance.

An excellent show. the dance numbers were particularly very good. Being a Brits we could appreciate the slang and the humor. Always very satisfied when we see an NAC production.

took my grandson - it was enchanting. We loved the dancing and singing and the story in general. Such fun. The dancers were magnificent.

  • Billy Elliot: One to pass up

by Fanofthevoice on 2013-01-07National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 1 out of 5

The dance is amateurish and boring. The voices are flat and colorless. I was insulted. I saw this production when it opened in Toronto and the performances where by far superior. Whoever decided to tour with this bunch is either contemptuous of audiences outside of urban Toronto or simply has very low standards of quality. What a sham!

Disappointing. For a movie primarily about dancing the dance numbers were lacklustre except for the closing. It did not meet my expectations.

We really enjoyed the show. The one criticism is its slow start, so much so that I wondered if I would be able to sit there throughout the whole show. The cast's singing and dancing was good but not exceptional. Therefore, until Billy could dance, the show was average. Once Billy found his talent there were some exceptional dancing and singing sequences. Therefore, I'd recommend this show.

This was not the block buster I had been expecting. The dancing sequences were very good but the musical score is less than stellar. From where we were sitting, the overall sound quality and the diction made it difficult to follow in parts.

Good story, good sets. Billy's singing and dancing was weak at times. I had seen production in New York and was disappointed by this one. My wife was seeing it for the first time and said she was "underwhelmed". Closing dance number was highlight of the show.

  • Good Show!

by Coralou on 2013-01-06National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

As it was when I saw this show in New York City, the fake English accents make it very difficult to understand what is being said and sung. My husband said he understood about half the dialogue. In New York, I attended with a British friend and she also had difficulty understanding the words.

  • Billy Elliot at NAC

by Beethoven1 on 2013-01-06National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

Billy Elliot is a wonderful story, close to home for me, and I have watched the movie several times. I thought that the cast at the NAC were wonderful, Billy especially, and a live show is always exciting. While billy's mum was really clear(amazing soprano) there were times when it was difficult to hear the lines and lyrics. I know the accent well and was surprised by how good a job everyone did there however. I would recommend the show to friends for the experience, but I didn't walk away humming any song in my head as none of them particularly resonated.

  • Billy Elliot was amazing!

by songanddancefan on 2013-01-06National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

An unforgettable show, that I cannot stop thinking about. The dancing was superb and the show was entertaining from start to finish. The young children left me awe struck, both with their dancing ability and their acting. I would recommend it to all, and would most definitely see it again if it returned to Ottawa.

  • Billy Elliot can dance

by Bellylaugh on 2013-01-06National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

Thoroughly enjoyable evening of entertainment at the Broadway Across Canada production of Billy Elliot. Strong performances from Billy, grandma and the ballet teacher. Had seen it on Broadway a couple of years ago and this production, while very good, did not measure up to the New York version.

The musical was non stop entertainment. The talented children in this show are so amazing. This is the 3rd time I have seen this play (Chicago, Toronto and now Ottawa) and every time I am left wanting more.
