Boise State Broncos Football History

The Boise State Broncos football team was first fielded in 1933 as a junior college squad and joined the NCAA in 1970. The Broncos have claimed two national championships: in 1958 as members of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and in 1980 as part of the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Starting in the Big Sky Conference from 1970 to 1995, the Broncos jumped to Division I ball with the Big West Conference between 1996 and 2000, followed by the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) until 2011 and the Mountain West Conference through 2025. In 2026, the Broncos will take part in a major conference realignment by joining the Pac-12 Conference.

Across conferences, the Broncos have won 22 conference championships along with six Mountain West Division titles. At the conclusion of the 2024 season, the Broncos held the longest active streak of winning seasons with 27. The consistent run of excellence comes with .727 all-time winning percentage and 13 bowl game wins, including a memorable 2007 Fiesta Bowl victory to cap an undefeated 13-0 season.

Notable former players include Kellen Moore, the FBS leader in all-time wins by a quarterback, and future Pro Football Hall of Famer Dave “The Intimidator” Wilcox. During his tenure between 2006 and 2013, head coach Chris Petersen notched a program-best 92 wins and garnered two Paul "Bear" Bryant Awards, in 2006 and 2009.

Boise State Broncos Football at Albertsons Stadium

Albertsons Stadium boasts a home turf so unique, it holds its own U.S. trademark. Boise State’s distinctive blue AstroTurf was installed as college football’s first non-green field in 1986. It was replaced by blue FieldTurf in 2008 and warranted a federal trademark by 2011. Otherwise known as “The Blue” or “Smurf Turf,” the field has now become one of college football’s most well-known traditions. Formerly Bronco Stadium until 2014, Albertsons Stadium offers a home game advantage to Boise State proven by several consecutive undefeated seasons at home. After expansions in 1975, 1997, 2009 and 2012, the current capacity at Albertsons Stadium is 36,360.
