Buffalo Bills Team History

The Buffalo Bills became the seventh team to join the American Football League when Ralph C. Wilson was awarded the franchise in 1959. In 1964 and 1965, the Bills won the AFC Championship, and then-Head Coach Lou Saban was named AFL Coach of the Year for both seasons. After Marv Levy took over as Head Coach in 1986, the Bills won five AFC championships and made four consecutive Super Bowl appearances from 1990–1993. To date, the Bills are the only team to play in four consecutive Super Bowl games.

Since hiring Head Coach Sean McDermott in January 2017, the Bills have made six playoff appearances. In 2022, the Bills made playoff history in a game against the Patriots when they became the first team in the Super Bowl era to score a touchdown on each of its first seven drives of a playoff game.

Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium

Since opening in 1973, Highmark Stadium, located in Orchard Park, New York, has been the home to the Buffalo Bills. The stadium underwent several name changes; known as Ralph Wilson Stadium from 1998 to 2015, it was renamed New Era Field in 2016, then Bills Stadium in 2020. Following a new naming rights deal in 2021, its official name is now Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Stadium.

A visit to Highmark Stadium for a Buffalo Bills game is sure to be a loud and high-energy experience, as the team’s fanbase, the Bills Mafia, is arguably the most loyal in the NFL. The group got its start in November 2010 following the upset from a dropped pass by receiver Stevie Johnson that could have resulted in a game-winning touchdown. The hashtag #BillsMafia caught wind on Twitter, and since then the group has been known for their tailgating antics and game-day attire and energy.

  • Buffalo Bills vs. Houston Texans.

by BrentP on 2009-11-02Ralph Wilson Stadium - Orchard ParkRating: 4 out of 5

It was a very good game for the first 3 quarters. It was a very rowdy atmosphere outside of the stadium and there were a lot of people enjoying themselves. Inside the stadium, it was not bad, the Rogers Center is nicer, but it was not bad. The seats were cold, but they handed out free programs which was nice. Good game, but there were some fans who were yelling at each other and security was very rough with one out of out of hand fans. Overall good experience.

First time for my wife and I in Buffalo, let alone at an NFL game! Great history at Ralph Wilson stadium, great fans. Too bad the team couldn't hold the lead and give the frustrated crowd a better home result. Would definitely go this this venue and see another game again, and we hope to this season still! Definitely take the time to enjoy the tailgating experience like we plan to next time. Nice at first to see so many Canadians there like us (we didn't want to stick out like sore thumbs-but many Canadians from Ontario are big Buffalo Bills supporters) but the American folks absolutely were welcoming and nice. Great time!

  • NFL experience must be done in person

The game was a great experience as was the tailgating and fans experience.

  • Browns 6 Bills 3

by Jeff1 on 2009-10-17Ralph Wilson Stadium - Orchard ParkRating: 5 out of 5

Went to the game as I am a Browns fan living to far from Cleveland. The game brought out the the true mediocrity of both teams. Neither QB could move the ball but the the teams were at least able to rush the ball. The game came down to special teams and who would make the last mistake. Zastudil of the Browns made a great kick that was muffed by the Bills Parrish. Cleveland kicked a freeby field goal for the win. The fans turned on their team, sick of the frustrating performance week in and week out. A fun experience being with the fans and tailgating. The play on the field was so bad it was good.

the hot dog and buns were terrible, expect a lot more from a major stadium

  • Browns Bills

The game was one of the worst ever played by 2 NFL teams. The day was a lot colder than it was supposed to be. We came from Montreal so we weren't dressed properly. But I took my 2 teenage sons and we still had a blast. The fans were funny. The seats were great. We will be back next year. Working with ticketmaster is always a pleasure.

  • BORING

Worst game I have ever seen both Buffalo and Cleveland didn't play well enough to beat a high school team, they owe everyone there their money back!!!!!

  • Bills Browns

This will be may last trip to Ralph Wilson Stadium, The tickets said line up 45 minutes before the game, well I was in the line up at gate 1 one hour before the game. I missed the 1st 10 minutes of the game, There were not enough staff to search people entering the stadium, also dis respectful people were constantly butting in at the front of the line and there was nobody there to control that. I will never spend that amount of money and also travel 3 hours one way to see the Bills again.

  • Bills - Saints missed expectations

by RajunCajun on 2009-09-28Ralph Wilson Stadium - Orchard ParkRating: 1 out of 5

With all the hype surrounding Drew Brees and the Saints coming to Buffalo and with the Bills playing as well as they had been in the first 2 weeks, needless to say, this game completely failed to meet expectations. The Bills looked like the Bills of 2008 and the game was boring until the final 5 minutes when the Saints actually put some numbers on the board.

  • Buffalo bills pre-season against chicago

by agardler on 2009-08-21Ralph Wilson Stadium - Orchard ParkRating: 4 out of 5

Good night overall, really hot and muggy, the game didn't really start to move until the 3rd quarter when all the 2nd stringers came in for both teams, buffalo's 2nd string quarter back had a pretty decent game.
