Calgary Flames History

The Flames originated in Atlanta, Georgia in 1972. After eight years, they relocated to Calgary in 1980, where they were greeted by a far more hockey-friendly fanbase. Thus began the Battle of Alberta, which refers to the ongoing rivalry between the Flames and the Edmonton Oilers to the north.

The Flames were vanguards in terms of bringing in foreign players, as Håkan Loob became one of the league's first European stars. Loob, Doug Gilmour, Joe Nieuwendyk, Mike Vernon, Lanny McDonald, and Al MacInnis were the stars behind the Flames' only Stanley Cup Championship in 1989, gaining a measure of payback against the Montreal Canadiens in six games. Montreal had defeated the Flames in the Stanley Cup Final three years earlier.

Despite a block on players from the USSR, the Flames had the foresight to draft Russian star Sergei Makarov in 1983. Makarov was among the first Russians to play in the NHL when he joined the Flames in 1989-1990.

Despite financial issues, the diminutive Theo Fleury and Jarome Iginla led the Flames throughout the '90s, bouncing in and out of the postseason with little long-term success until 2004, when the Flames made another run at the Cup, only to lose to the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games. The Flames have made it to the Playoffs 25 times and have two Presidents' Trophies to their credit, along with seven division championships.

Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome

Home to the Calgary Flames, the idea for the Scotiabank Saddledome was seeded when it became clear that two major events would be in need of a world-class arena — the bid for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games and the arrival of an NHL franchise. The Saddledome opened its doors on October 15, 1983. The arena became a star attraction during the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, hosting both the figure skating and hockey competitions. In the fall of 1994, the arena underwent renovations and one year later the new Scotiabank Saddledome was unveiled. The Calgary Flames celebrated their first season at the arena during their home opener for the 1995-1996 season. The arena can seat more than 19,000 guests and hosts 150 events per year.

    North American Sports

by Cal on 2023-02-19Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

As a neutral I could appreciate the showmanship (the pyrotechnics and build up), the game was lacklustre and the atmosphere was comparable to a graveyard. The national anthem was sung by about 100 people and when the puck was dropped it was just silent. Coming from the UK and seeing how serious sports like football are taken back home it was a shock. If you enjoy this sport then amazing. But if You come from a culture of actual sport then don’t expect an atmosphere, feels like more of a social gathering.

    A review of two halves

by Slartibartfast on 2023-01-21Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

First the good. Excellent experience registering on line east use of electronic tickets. Now the bad. Initially we tried three times to get tickets. There are two additional charges for Ticket Master on my credit card; one was reversed but the other, for several hundred has not been and we have no record of the tickets being delivered. Ticketmaster we no help so We’ve imitated a reversal with the bank. Very poor outcome.

Staff is professional, fans are excellent, Flames games are a spectacle! Could use a new building, though.

Love the flames - not the dome

by Sal Bando on 2022-11-01Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Crowd was crazy , great atmosphere, venue is so outdated it’s not funny. Bathrooms are a nightmare. Crowded concourse and long lines. Lower bowl seating really tough to see whole ice. Only the first 4 rows of the upper section really worth sitting in but are so much money. Painful to park right now with the Green Line construction gong show. Will definitely mean I attend less games this year in person.

    Loved it

by Skeg on 2022-10-18Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Smooth experience getting in and out of the venue, great fun with crowd involvement, loved it. Only fault was the lack of toilets in the venue. Massive lines, even for the mens toilet.

    Amazing memories made!

My sons first NHL experience and we had a blast! Unfortunately all the food items are way over priced, so we just didn’t partake.

    NO MORE BUD

    by C on 2022-09-29

Dome didn’t have anymore bud light or Budweiser. They now have 2 new beers which I personally think aren’t as good. Not only that but they increased the price to $11.25. I also arrived an hour early and was surprised that there was no happy hour ($5 beers) but instead full price. Kinda disappointed :(

    Overall experience

by Person is typing… on 2022-05-29Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

The red lot was amazing except people throwing beers and food at people. The shuttles part of it though was how dumb that ref was as he made the most stupidest calls ever by calling that shot which should’ve been a goal. Screw you ref.
