Calgary Flames History

The Flames originated in Atlanta, Georgia in 1972. After eight years, they relocated to Calgary in 1980, where they were greeted by a far more hockey-friendly fanbase. Thus began the Battle of Alberta, which refers to the ongoing rivalry between the Flames and the Edmonton Oilers to the north.

The Flames were vanguards in terms of bringing in foreign players, as Håkan Loob became one of the league's first European stars. Loob, Doug Gilmour, Joe Nieuwendyk, Mike Vernon, Lanny McDonald, and Al MacInnis were the stars behind the Flames' only Stanley Cup Championship in 1989, gaining a measure of payback against the Montreal Canadiens in six games. Montreal had defeated the Flames in the Stanley Cup Final three years earlier.

Despite a block on players from the USSR, the Flames had the foresight to draft Russian star Sergei Makarov in 1983. Makarov was among the first Russians to play in the NHL when he joined the Flames in 1989-1990.

Despite financial issues, the diminutive Theo Fleury and Jarome Iginla led the Flames throughout the '90s, bouncing in and out of the postseason with little long-term success until 2004, when the Flames made another run at the Cup, only to lose to the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games. The Flames have made it to the Playoffs 25 times and have two Presidents' Trophies to their credit, along with seven division championships.

Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome

Home to the Calgary Flames, the idea for the Scotiabank Saddledome was seeded when it became clear that two major events would be in need of a world-class arena — the bid for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games and the arrival of an NHL franchise. The Saddledome opened its doors on October 15, 1983. The arena became a star attraction during the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, hosting both the figure skating and hockey competitions. In the fall of 1994, the arena underwent renovations and one year later the new Scotiabank Saddledome was unveiled. The Calgary Flames celebrated their first season at the arena during their home opener for the 1995-1996 season. The arena can seat more than 19,000 guests and hosts 150 events per year.

    Great Game!

by Mel on 2022-03-30Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Game was great, good experience with the exception of a fan sitting a row behind that broke a record for using the F word. She was loud and vulgar and nothing was done despite the Saddledome having sings posted that they will not tolerate this type of behavior. She was 2 rows in front of an Usher and right on the end, there was no way she wasn't heard.

by Lynne on 2022-03-29Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

I bought my relatives from England with me to a great game. The atmosphere was electric! The fans from both Oilers and Flames were sitting all around us and everyone joined in together when goals were scored. Just an all round great evening!!!!

    Ticket sharing

by Unknown on 2022-03-21Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

I really enjoyed being able to share the tickets to the phones of the people I went with. It allowed them to have the tickets on their phone and we could meet inside instead of having to go all together at the same time.

    by G on 2022-03-15Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Everything went well. digital tickets are great. First time to a game in 2 years. Everything is more expensive unless you arrive for happy hour, prices still $5.00.

by Shaylinnn on 2022-03-06Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

I loved every second of it, even though they lost. Was good seeing them play live. Last time I watched them play was January 2019 so yes I really enjoyed it.

    Poor fans

by Karnac on 2022-03-06Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Seats , even though they were high, sight was fine. Cost was acceptable. Some fans thought it was ok to begin vaping in the stands beside us. When does the team or arena staff take responsibility for ushers who turn a blind eye towards fans who are vaping and are too drunk while still serving them? Don't know if I will ever return to a NHL game in any city.

We were treated well., it was nice to be able to eat and dri

by Rosie on 2022-02-14Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Pretty good seats but too expensive. I think that the tickets are overpriced for where we sat. 211-section row 18. We travelled 4 hours from east of Milk River to get to the game and I bought 3 tickets for Christmas gifts. So it is very expensive for a single woman-wage earner. We still enjoyed the game

    Just a BIG Drunk

by NotHappy on 2022-02-14Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

This was just a horrible experience I would have given no stars but it would not let me. The government should have left the no drinking clause in the restrictions cause people in Calgary cannot just have one drink. Beer everywhere, No one cared who they spilled their beers on! drunk people falling down, kids watching this Totally unacceptable. Someone spit on our car windows. Just the worst experience. Was anyone watching the game??? Calgary needs to grow up! This is not just about you and drinking to get drunk. Maybe look around and see who else is watching. Kids shouldn't see this crape. Did anyone see the game?? Or was this just a place to drink? Maybe the flames need to remind people of this Game should be a family show not a drunk place. Where were the police These people all drove home!!!! Very Sad Calgary Flames!!!!

    ????

by Sweetpea on 2022-02-13Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Overall it was good, but very disappointed in information on e mail stating 50% capacity when in reality it was much higher. Made me uncomfortable. Fans were great, prices were good for section. Food drinks all good. Service was good. Tickets for rescheduled games i appreciated the information in emails keeping me informed. But again it was absolutely not 50% capacity.

    Disappointed

by P Lindsay on 2022-02-13Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

The venue was suppose to be at 50% capacity, due to covid restrictions. At best, it was 75% full. Probably more. This was my 2nd sons 1st nhl game. I last went to an nhl game with my first son and had the exact same complaint. Then and this game, the over serving of alcoholic beverages was disappointing. I have no problem with people wanting to enjoy a beer or glass of wine with a hockey game. But literally, every person you walk by on the concord is double fisting. The drunkiness and behaviors (brawling, threats being made, nonstop swearing) make it impossible for a 10 year old child enjoy a hockey game. Which is where we were at. It felt like a bar though. I have no desire to subject my kids to that again

    Great win

    by CJS23 on 2022-02-12Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Flames beat the Golden Knights 6-0. Team played exceptionally well, especially Backs, Mangipane and Markstrom. Solid game for the Flames in all aspects. Food and beverages available in the concessions again is a large bonus.

Might as well have watched from home

by Melissa on 2022-02-01Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Paid all that money to go to a game, it wasn't enjoyable. The stadium was lifeless. You could literally hear a pin drop at some points probably because everyone was forced to wear masks and couldn't partake in enjoying a beverage or food. What's the point of 50% capacity when you didn't socially distance people anyway. Just let people enjoy the game like they are meant to be watched - full capacity, maskless and with the ability to enjoy food or a beverage.
