Chicago Blackhawks History

The Blackhawks were founded in 1926 and were part of the "Original Six" group of franchises, which constituted the NHL from 1942 until league expansion in 1967. The club won Stanley Cup Championships in the 1933-1934 and 1937-1938 seasons, but success proved largely elusive over the next two decades, except for one appearance in the final in 1943-1944. The 1960s signaled a rebirth for the franchise, with future Hall of Famers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Pierre Pilote, and Glenn Hall leading the way. The Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 1961 Stanley Cup Final, collecting their third championship.

The addition of eventual Hall of Fame goaltender Tony Esposito ahead of the 1969-1970 season marked the start of an era during which the team earned a Playoff berth in 28 consecutive seasons. In 1971 and 1973 the Blackhawks reached the Stanley Cup Final, losing both times to the Montreal Canadiens. More excellence followed in the 1990s, aided by the likes of Ed Belfour and Jeremy Roenick, as the Blackhawks finished with the league's best record in 1990-1991 and made the Stanley Cup Final in 1991-1992.

By selecting their eventual captain Jonathan Toews third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft, the Blackhawks began stocking up on young talent, also adding Patrick Kane first overall the following year. They returned to the Playoffs in 2008-2009, and in the very next season, Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Flyers for their first Stanley Cup Championship in 49 years. They added championships in 2013 — beating the Boston Bruins in a thrilling series that included three overtime games — and 2015, topping the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Chicago Blackhawks at United Center

Home to the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls, United Center — which opened in 1994 — is the largest NHL arena in the United States, with a capacity of 19,717 for hockey games. The idea for the arena was created in 1988 by William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Jerry Reinsdorf, majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls. The United Center has hosted the Stanley Cup Finals three times: in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Championship in 2015 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home in the sixth game — the first time since 1938 that the franchise clinched the Cup in Chicago.

    Blackhawks vs Lightning

    by Timber03 on 2010-09-24MTS Centre - Winnipeg

Fun to watch Toews and the crew. I thought the tickets were more then they had to be for an exhibition game - no Kane, no Hossa, no Kopecky, no Campbell, no Bolland, no Hjalmarsson on the ice.

    Never again

by Andster on 2010-08-02Chicago Hilton and Towers - Chicago

This was my 1st and last Convention, not what i expected.I drove 9hrs hoping to get lots of pictures and autographs, not the case. You had no chance at all at Toews,Kane,Keith,Seabrook and Sharp unless you scratch and won witch 90% of the tickets said SORRY,and even if you won you'd only get 1 of these guys. And the Legends were bascially the same. This convention i thought was for the fans,it's not it's for the venders to make money.I'm a huge BlackHawks fan and i was so disapointed.Never again what a shame. Also the Stanley Cup was there and all u could do was take a picture of it not with it.Your better off going to Toronto to the Hockey Hall Of Fame were you can touch the Stanley Cup and Take a picture with it.

    Hawks vs. Devils Awesome game!!

by Charka on 2010-01-05United Center - Chicago

Even though I'm not from Chicago and have never been to the United Center, we ended up going to the Dec. 31st game and let me tell you "Unforgettable"! We sat in sec. 113 row 16 and the seats were amazing for the price we paid. We were close enough to watch the players, easy access to the smoking gate, concessions & lets not forget washrooms. If you truely are a die hard "Hawks" fan I would definately recommend going to see a game @ the United Center, it was an experience of a life time.

by ecochrane on 2009-12-02United Center - Chicago

As a Canadian in an American city watching hockey, I was completey blown away by the enthuisiasm of Chicago fans. From the singing of the national anthem, to the final shoowout goal, the fans in Chicago were amazing. Cheers, boos, everything a hockey game should have. The Blackhawks are an original 6 clube, and its good to see that hockey as alive and well in Chicago again...

    standing room is a sham

by cargebert on 2009-11-14United Center - Chicago

had tickets for third level standing room, knew they would be bad but had no idea how bad. Instead of being right at the edge of the top layer, they had put a row of folding chairs there so trying to watch the game involved ducking and weaving trying to look around a row of people seated right in front of you. I get that they're trying to jam as many people in as possible, but that row of folding chairs completely devalued the standing room.

We had a really nice time at the United Center. It was really close to the El. It was easy to walk. No signs though so you need to ask. Nice arena. Good fans. Seem to know their hockey.

    Go Hawks Go

    by DannyMac22 on 2009-10-26United Center - Chicago

Although I had nosebleed seats, the game against Vancouver was an enjoyable time. I was however at the very top row and the speakers were difficult to hear/understand. Also, being my first time there, the instand promo pack that was handed to me was a little confusing, but since the nice people of Chicago helped me out, I got a free coffee!

by CanadaSJP on 2009-10-22United Center - Chicago

This was my first ever hockey game and I really enjoyed it. The hockey itself was just great, although I think a few other things from the venue could be improved. First of all, the music was a bit too loud, especially during breaks. Trying to talk to each other resulted in severe injuries to the throat and larynx. Also, it was, in one way, nice to have a server asking if we needed anything, but in another it was also annoying having someone shoving beer offers in your face every 10 minutes while you're trying to keep your eye on a high speed game.
