Chicago Blackhawks History

The Blackhawks were founded in 1926 and were part of the "Original Six" group of franchises, which constituted the NHL from 1942 until league expansion in 1967. The club won Stanley Cup Championships in the 1933-1934 and 1937-1938 seasons, but success proved largely elusive over the next two decades, except for one appearance in the final in 1943-1944. The 1960s signaled a rebirth for the franchise, with future Hall of Famers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Pierre Pilote, and Glenn Hall leading the way. The Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 1961 Stanley Cup Final, collecting their third championship.

The addition of eventual Hall of Fame goaltender Tony Esposito ahead of the 1969-1970 season marked the start of an era during which the team earned a Playoff berth in 28 consecutive seasons. In 1971 and 1973 the Blackhawks reached the Stanley Cup Final, losing both times to the Montreal Canadiens. More excellence followed in the 1990s, aided by the likes of Ed Belfour and Jeremy Roenick, as the Blackhawks finished with the league's best record in 1990-1991 and made the Stanley Cup Final in 1991-1992.

By selecting their eventual captain Jonathan Toews third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft, the Blackhawks began stocking up on young talent, also adding Patrick Kane first overall the following year. They returned to the Playoffs in 2008-2009, and in the very next season, Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Flyers for their first Stanley Cup Championship in 49 years. They added championships in 2013 — beating the Boston Bruins in a thrilling series that included three overtime games — and 2015, topping the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Chicago Blackhawks at United Center

Home to the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls, United Center — which opened in 1994 — is the largest NHL arena in the United States, with a capacity of 19,717 for hockey games. The idea for the arena was created in 1988 by William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Jerry Reinsdorf, majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls. The United Center has hosted the Stanley Cup Finals three times: in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Championship in 2015 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home in the sixth game — the first time since 1938 that the franchise clinched the Cup in Chicago.

bring back a hockey team in winnipeg

by AinaKaner on 2010-09-24MTS Centre - Winnipeg

The game was awesome...however i wish the game started at 7:30 instead of 7 pm...I missed the opening...I was waiting for my friends to come coz they couldn't find parking..but the game was awesome! they should play more pre-season games in Winnipeg or better yet put an NHL in Winnipeg! I was kinda disappointed that Kane didn't play! and Seabrook! But other than that it was a great game. I'm looking forward to watch another game next year

Although I enjoyed the hockey game, I want to express a few concerns. 1. The last minute time change of this event is unacceptable. It is very unfair to folks who were either planning to be there at a later time or more importantly were not aware of the time change at all. This was a huge error by True North. 2. I was in the upper deck of the MTS Centre for the first time for a hockey event. There are blind spots (along the near side boards) that preclude you from seeing portions of the hockey game. One would think that a relatively new arena would not have sight line issues. 3. A couple of your concession sites ran out of food during the first intermission requiring me to waste time moving from line to line. This happened to be an issue for me because I needed to buy dinner at the game due to the earlier start time which precluded me from eating dinner at home. One would think that vendors would be well supplied for such an event.

    Hawks VS Bolts

by BeLeaf on 2010-09-24MTS Centre - Winnipeg

The game was alright but a bit pricy for good seats to watch a few stars play at about 65%. Very disappointed that Stamkos got more attention than Toews in his home town.

    Good Game, Shabby Service

by warmwinnipeg on 2010-09-24MTS Centre - Winnipeg

It was a good game. Both teams played some/most of their best players. The big disappointment is the service at the Phone Booth, In the upper bowl, the walkways are extremely small. When there are huge line ups at the concessions, plus huge line ups at the washroom, it does feel like a phone booth. Why do they not staff all of the concessions/tills? Why do they not have extra people to keep the lines moving? It is a major disappointment when you have to leave the game to go to the washroom or the concession because it is impossible at intermission. Please FIX THIS PROBLEM!! A $7.50 per beer you can afford some more minimum wasge staff.

Lightning 2 years in a row... hoping for 3!

by MCAF on 2010-09-24MTS Centre - Winnipeg

Other than the event being moved 30 minutes earlier with very minimal notice, everything was great. Excellent event, good crowd, great game! I'll be back next year... especially if they keep bringing Tampa :)

Product on the ice was fantastic!!!

    by Hockey71 on 2010-09-24MTS Centre - Winnipeg

Game was great you really appreciate how good the NHL stars are! All the issues we have are with the MTS Center, seats are so tight it's extremely uncomfortable. The MTS Center really can't handle a high volume crowd; the main hallway is way to narrow. You will miss part of any sold out event because it takes so long to get to anywhere. You pay good money to watch but you end up missing a bunch of it just to get a drink or jersey or go to the washroom. I think we can afford to go to all the games but the facility really makes me question going, it’s a shame they designed such a nice new building this way. Leaving on a positive all the MTS staff are great!

NHL'ers put on a good show

by PoppaMcD on 2010-09-24MTS Centre - Winnipeg

Good game and rosters, however a few big names were missing frim Chicago's lineup (Hossa, Kane, Campbell, Seabrook). Tampa, on the other hand, was stacked! St. Louis, Lecavalier, Gagne, Stamkos all played. Nearly a sellout crowd, I would go back again next year should Winnipeg host another exhibition game.

    The game was awsome

by whiskey on 2010-09-24MTS Centre - Winnipeg

The hockey game it's self was great lots of hitting and action also lots of big name players. But we left it kind of late to get ticket s so we were forced to sit in the 300 section. Sound was terriable (any interviews we could not hear a thing) and also my son wanted ice cream (but it had to be soft served because he has a peanut allergy and we know that there is a place there that is safe for him to have it) but because we were in the upper deck (300 section ) I had to go out of the arena and then try to go back into the arena that was a bit of a problem no one would let me in because I had a (300 zone ticket, and there scanner would not scan my ticket) also I asked at least 4 people in the upper concession area if there was a place that served this ice cream no one new how I could get it or where it was or if it was even in the upper area. (it took me at least 25 mins to get him his ice cream)

NHL back in Winnipeg for Exhibition game

    by HockeyMomof1 on 2010-09-24MTS Centre - Winnipeg

Was great to have the NHL back in the "Peg. Even if it was only for an evening. The action was exciting and the crowd was really into the game. Especially when our home-town hero, Jonathan Toews, scored a goal and later was named the 2nd star of the game. There was even a fight which the crowd loved! The only disappointing part of the evening was a late time change to the game from 7:30 to 7:00 which meant our family missed the warm-up which is always great to see as the whole team is on the ice and you can watch the players practice their game moves and get their game face on.

    NHL hockey

by AlyMac on 2010-09-24MTS Centre - Winnipeg

Time change at last minute was not very considerate. From out of town and a half hour on a work day makes a difference.

I'm not really a fan of either team, but cheered Chicago on all the way!! I've been to a few NHL exhibition games and this by far was the best one. I guess it helps that we were watching the Stanley Cup champs as well as Winnipeg's hometown hero. It's also our one chance a year to come and watch a live NHL game.

by lamahdo on 2010-09-24MTS Centre - Winnipeg

While my son enjoyed his first NHL game, I think that the cost of 2 tickets (150.00) and then sitting up in the nose bleed section is just a little high. If we want to bring a team back here then we need to make it affordable for families to go. Other then the price, he did have a good time.
