About

Chilliwack In Concert

With their string of hits through the 1970s and ‘80s, Chilliwack were responsible for some of the most memorable and melodic songs of the era. They also became part of the foundation for Canadian popular music, with smashes like "Baby Blue," "Fly at Night," and "My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone)" all helping to ensure the nation's musical artists had a regular home on their own airwaves.

Though vitally important as a landmark act of the early "Can-Con" era, Chilliwack is very much part of the present, too. Bill Henderson is still at the helm more than five decades after the band's origins in Vancouver's bustling rock scene of the ‘60s.

Seeking a fresh start after the collapse of local favourites The Collectors, Henderson founded Chilliwack in 1970. By 1972, they were making an impact on both sides of the border with songs like "Lonesome Mary," the first of many singles that cracked Billboard's Top 100. The smooth, sultry rocker "Crazy Talk" and more country-influenced "Raino" earned them further exposure.

Henderson and his group hit their apex in the early ‘80s with the release of "My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone)," an ingenious mix of hard rock, pure pop, and doo-wop that showcased Henderson's vocal harmonies with the band's drummer and co-vocalist Brian MacLeod. A No. 1 single at home that also reached No. 22 in the U.S., it established Chilliwack as Canada's preeminent hit-makers. In 1982, the band extended the winning streak with their tenth album ‘Opus X' and "Whatcha Gonna Do," another top 10 single in Canada.

Though lineup changes and record company problems led to the end of Chilliwack's original run in 1988, Henderson's music career continued to thrive thanks to his participation in UHF, a Canadian folk-rock supergroup he formed with Shari Ulrich and Roy Forbes.

The demand for Chilliwack was so high that Henderson launched a new version of the band in 1997. Released in 2003, ‘There and Back – Live' is a testament to Chilliwack's renewed vitality. One of Canada's most iconic musical acts remains an audience favorite thanks to Henderson's indefatigable energy as the frontman. He gets invaluable support from such talented players as his brother Ed Henderson on guitars and background vocals, and drummer Jerry Adolphe, a part of the Chilliwack story since 1984.

Chilliwack took the chill out of this cold eve

by MaurBal on 2011-01-23Sound Academy - Toronto

I have never heard a group from way back in the 70's that just keeps getting better....the vocals (Bill Henderson has one of the strongest voices out there), all the musicians are very tight, just totally awesome.....Some people don't know who Chilliwack is.....but whenever they come to Southern Ontario we go see them.....always a great show..... And first time to Sound Academy ....thought the doors didn't open till 8 but when we got there it was pretty full...a great place...enjoyed it immensely ,,,great set-up...except for the strong smell of some sort of cleanser, pine sol...??? whew...pretty overpowering for awhile..... better clean than dirty tho.....would llike to visit Sound Academy again...

    Well worth the Wait

by rchoyle on 2011-01-23Sound Academy - Toronto

I have been a fan of Chilliwack since I've been 15 years old and I am now 45 and only seeing them Jan 21st at the Sound Academy for the first time in my life and the show was everything I hoped it would be and more! For some reason or another, this was the frst time I was aware they played in Toronto and why I waited practically entire life to see them. They did all their hits and really put on an amazing show with some amazing guitar solos and Bill Henderson still has amazing pipes after all these years. He hasn't lost his highs at all unlike a lot of great singers do when they reach a certain age. I would recommend Chilliwack to anybody that is a fan of good music. They sat down at a table at the end of the show to sign autographs, which is something you rarely see these days, or any days. I was dissapointed about one thing though, and that was that thy mentioned they have recently been inducted into te "Western Canada Hall of Fame" an I was shocked to find out that apparently thy aren't good enough to be in the Canadian Hall of Fame!! Are you kidding me!! That is a crime to not have them in the Canadan Hall of Fame and it is someting that should be looked into immediately by the people that make these decisions.

    by Nickknack1212 on 2011-01-23Sound Academy - Toronto

It was so good to hear all those hits live again... and Carl Dixon was great too. Not enough seats for the aging audience ;-) but it was a wonderful evening with solid Canadian music!

    Older and better!!!

by ChallengerOne on 2010-09-30Shell Theatre-Dow Centennial Centre - Fort Saskatchewan

I enjoyed the concert tremendously. I haven't been to one for a while and took my family with me. My kids are 16 and 20 and I am happy they enjoy my type of music as well. We all felt the concert was very good. The playing of musical instruments was phenomenal. I found they have improved the music on many of their hit songs. Excellent job! The Shell Theatre was a great place to attend this concert. The seats were great, sound excellent, and even though it was sold out, the theatre holds 550 people making it a relaxing place to be. It would be nice to see more of the 70's and 80's bands in the future. Excellent show Chilliwack!!!! Thanks!!!!

    Chilliwack was awesome

by jmhs on 2010-06-03River Rock Show Theatre - Richmond

I loved it. It exceeded my expectations. Chilliwack have still got what it takes to keep performing. I'd definitely go and see them again. I also really enjoyed the documentary they had on during the intermission. The Collectors didn't pull it off. Howie Vickers has lost his voice.

    They "Don't Stop" rockin!!!

by AH1974 on 2010-05-25River Rock Show Theatre - Richmond

Awesome! They did all good songs except for title name, Don't Stop, and they needed do that for me to give it a 5! I kept yelling for it, but that's OK, cuz with Communication Breakdown, my girl, Lonesome Mary, Fly at Night, etc, at least did old good stuff! Bill Henderson has an awsome Steve Perry, Rik Emmett, Joe Walsh style voice, similar to Wide Mouth Mason singer (Best voice I ever heard). Got their autographs, so that was up close and personal. Thumbs up!

CHILLIWACK 40th ANNIVERSARY CONCERT - AMAZING!!!

by Anniegal8 on 2010-05-23River Rock Show Theatre - Richmond

This 40th anniversary Chilliwack Band concert was so much fun. Everyone rocking in their seats until finally audience members ran down to enjoy the music from the very small space that was between the audience and the band. People were rocking and shaking their booty to the music. These band members might be aging like the rest of us... but they sound just as good and better than their younger days. I am so glad that Bill Henderson sent me an email about it.... and that some friends and I were able to share this special occasion. Great music... great venue.... very intimate and beautiful setting! Thank you Bill and the band!!

    Fantastic

by Riviera on 2010-05-23River Rock Show Theatre - Richmond

The Chilliwack 40th anniversary show was fantastic. Bill Henderson's stories about the songs, band members, life experiences etc., gave unique insights on the band and the creative process of making music. The concert was also a chance to see one of Canada's pioneering rock acts from the 60's. Having a chance to hear The Collectors play Lydia Purple and Lookin' at a Baby was a rare opportunity. The psychedelic back ground just added to the overall experience. The sound was awesome and the setlist did not disappoint. Great show.

Chilliwack still knows how to rock!

by folkie on 2010-05-23River Rock Show Theatre - Richmond

Seeing the Collectors reformed was great! Howie and Claire may be currently out of the music business, but they still have the chops and they are still professional. The video at intermission was enlightening about the progression of the Collectors and Chilliwack. The tributes to the 2 members who have passed away was touching and appropriate. The finale with the Collectors members and the ex Chilliwack members was unbelievable! The stage should have collapsed under that collective talent! Bill Henderson is not only a musical genius, he is a survivor and incredibly adaptable. I have seen him accoustically solo, with UHF and with Chilliwack and no matter what the genre, his musicality hits the right notes!

    Chilliwack was incredible!

by Carmichael on 2010-05-23River Rock Show Theatre - Richmond

What a great production! I have seen Chilliwack perform live many times over the last 25 years or so and I think this was the best performance yet. Bill is a very talented musician as well, he has a great stage presence. He paid tribute to the fallen players that weren't there in person... but they were definitley in the house!

    Chilliwack rocks

by 185967 on 2010-05-23River Rock Show Theatre - Richmond

Bill Henderson and Chilliwack, in all its incarnations, is a Canadian rock icon and legend. Their show at the River Rock last night was superb, showing Bill still can hit all the high notes, play lead guitar with the best of the guitar legends, and relate to West Coasters only the way Chiliwack can do. First thing I did this morning was to turn on the CD and crank up their Greatest Hits. I've been a Chilliwack fan since the heady days of the early 1970s, when hippies were still on Fourth Ave. and Greenpeace was geting ready to sail to protest the nuclear test at Amchika. What great way to celebrate Victoria Day weekend. Tjhe CBC was out in force filming the show, so everyone will be able to see the concert for themselves at some point in the future. Thank Bill Henderson, and Chilliwack - you're the sound track of our West Coast lives - Canadian style.

    Chilliwack was great!

by Luise on 2010-05-23River Rock Show Theatre - Richmond

This concert was awesome! Going from the 60's with the Collectors songs, then into the 70's and the 80's with Chilliwack and the songs we grew up with. The guys looked like they were having fun on stage! Guitars were great to listen to....the drummer made it look easy, not many that can play like him...WOW!

    "Collectors" get "Chilliwack"-ed

by VIICOUGAR on 2010-05-22River Rock Show Theatre - Richmond

The concert was an incredible "3 hours"...YES...."3 hours" of solid music ! As a teen growing up, I knew of "Chiiliwack" but never realized the complexity and musicianship of these players. The concert began with "The Collectors" (who? I thought...my husband enlightened me as to why "this" psychedelic band was there and then it all came together for me). It was non-stop foot tapping, finger rapping and head nodding from the get go, We were rocked by players of the past (and even by the ones that are no longer with us) proving that the music never dies! It was an emotional evening for all. So glad that we could be part of their 40th Anniversary.

A great renewal of an old passion.

by Rickman on 2010-05-22River Rock Show Theatre - Richmond

Haven't seen these guys live since a New Year's Eve Collectors' concert back in 68 and it was no disappointment. It was great to see Bill Henderson, Howie Vickers and Claire Lawrence together, looking older but sounding the same. OK, age has taken a bit of a toll on voices, but not much, and it hasn't affected their energy or passion at all. we really enjoyed the evening. thanks for bringing the Chilliwack band to your stage. we'll be back.

Ckilliwack with the Collectors very enjoyable

by Beanball on 2010-05-22River Rock Show Theatre - Richmond

Had a great time listening to all the Chilliwack hits and the Collectors who I thought was the best band around in the 60's. The sound was really good till about half way through and then it got really loud. We were in the 4th row and two of my friends had to leave and go to the back. As it got louder the sound quality went down. The energy of the band and the stories were wonderful. A great evening! Al

They still have it goin' on!

by Billyfan01 on 2010-05-22River Rock Show Theatre - Richmond

I have been a huge fan, going back to the Collectors days (I am 67) - When the Collectors played as part of George Ryga's play "Grass & Wild Strawberries" at the Playhouse I attended every Saturday matinee performance during the play's run, just to see them perform. I also used to hear Claire Lawrence playing Jazz at the Black Spot Coffee House on Dunbar in the early 60's so was glad to see him again. He looked great - slender, dark hair, etc., Gravity & time have been kinder to him than to me! The Collectors portion was quite short - about 35 to 40 minutes, but after the 30 minute break, they all came back to carry on as Chilliwack for a much longer set - Total time on stage all together was about 2-1/2 hours - we got our money's worth! Wish they had played a few more "Grass & Wild Strawberries" songs though. (Although they DID do "17th Summer".) The Chilliwack portion was great, although 3 or 4 songs had the sound cranked up just a little too loud (playing homage to Brian "Too Loud" McLeod no doubt) to the point where Bill's vocals were too distorted to be enjoyable. (Which is why I only gave it 4 stars out of 5) Altogether a very enjoyable nostalgic evening. Looking forward to reliving it when its shown on CBC down the road.

    Chilliwack / Collectors

by haneygirl on 2010-05-22River Rock Show Theatre - Richmond

Really enjoyed the 40th anniversary celebration of the Collectors and Chilliwack! Such a heart-warming great night of nostalgia as they brought us through the years of their work with special effects and many past members of the band. Members who couldn't be there or had passed away were fondly remembered by Bill Henderson - he really did an amazing job! He has always been an A1 entertainer in my opinion and he never disappoints - I've seen him many times over the years and he just has such a way about him - we feel like we personally know him! Such a night!!!!! After the first set (Collectors) was done (which included a wonderful performance of Lydia Purple & Looking at a Baby which gave us goosebumps), we were chatting through the intermission (before the very interesting documentary/photo show) with other excited people in the audience. We were trying to figure out which Chilliwack favorites would likely be performed after the intermission - assuming that they would probably only do a few, What a nice surprise when they continued to do pretty well all of their greatest hits! What a surprise! Over 3 hours of nostalgia and just great music! We have been to many Chilliwack concerts and this was definitely our favorite!!! Great work! We really want to go back tonight!
