Clemson University Tigers Women’s Basketball History

The Clemson University women’s basketball team competed for the first time during the 1975-76 season. After becoming members of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1977, the Tigers claimed the regular season conference championship in 1981. Led by two-time ACC Coach of the Year Jim Davis between 1987 and 2005, Clemson secured two ACC Tournament titles, in 1996 and 1999, and appeared in 14 NCAA Women’s March Madness tournaments. The team made their deepest tournament run in 1991, when Clemson advanced to the Elite Eight. In 2019, the Tigers notched their 16th NCAA Tournament appearance, their first in over 15 years, and reached the Second Round. In 2023, the Clemson Tigers competed in their third Women’s National Invitation Tournament, advancing to a program-best Super 16 finish.

Clemson University Tigers at Littlejohn Coliseum

Littlejohn Coliseum serves as home court for the Clemson Tigers women’s basketball team. Opened in 1968, the arena was named after Clemson alum and the university’s first business manager, James C. Littlejohn, who spearheaded construction of several university athletic buildings including the venerated football venue, Memorial Stadium. Around its exterior, Littlejohn Coliseum displays a bronze bust of James Littlejohn as well as a statue of Clemson mascot Littlejohn Tiger, both unveiled in 1969. Littlejohn Coliseum has undergone two major renovations, in 2003 and 2016, and currently reaches a maximum 9,000-seat capacity.
