About WFG Continental Cup of Curling

Established in 2001, the WFG Continental Cup is one of the curling community's most exciting tournaments. Modeled after golf's Ryder Cup, the event offers a wide range of competitions taking place over a four-day period each year. Tournaments have featured some of the world's greatest curlers, including Olympians and World Champions.

In the Continental Cup of Curling, it's truly North America vs. everyone else. Team North America comprises two men's and two women's teams chosen by the Canadian Curling Association; the other teams are chosen by the United States Curling Association and the World Curling Federation.

The World Curling Federation presides over the rinks and matches. There are five main categories: mixed doubles, singles, skins, and (newly added for 2019) team scramble and mixed team scramble. Historically, North America has dominated the event, winning eight of the championships and placing in numerous ties. By comparison, Canada (which competed alone in 2015 without the rest of North America) and Europe have each won once, and Team World has won once.

The World Financial Group sponsors the Continental Cup, which in 2019 once again takes place at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, where it was held in 2014 and 2017. Other host cities have included Calgary; Regina; and London, Ontario.

Team North America's current coach is three-time Brier and two-time World Champion Jeff Stoughton. North America's 2019 captain is Olympic-medal-winning curler Pete Fenson. Fenson won USA Curling Athlete of the Year in 2003, 2005, and 2011. Team World's coach is Fredrik Lindberg, who has represented Sweden at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics and has appeared in three World Curling Championships.

    Men's curling at its finest....

You can definitely see the finesse of the game in a skin's competition when you match top notch teams such as Martin and Ulsrud. They came to entertain the fans and have some fun and that's exactly what they did!

    Great interactive event

by Leadfoot on 2011-01-18SERVUS PLACE - St Albert

The Continental Cup was a great event. I've attended the Briers and the World Cups and the Pre-Olympic Trials, but this event had the curlers interacting and curling with other. They honestly looked like they were having great fun. The skins and the scoring of same was new to me but was introduced and explained well so the fans could understand. Having the curlers that weren't on the ice sit in a box to cheer their "team" on was very entertaining. Watching the curlers of different genders and countries try to communicate with each other on the same team during the skins games was also very entertaining. The regular type of curling competition in the first two days of the Continental Cup were fantastic with the best curlers putting forth their best efforts to win, giving the fans some excellent curling shots. The only downside for me and perhaps alot of other people from out of town was the length of downtime between some of the draws - sometimes 4 or 4-1/2 hours. For out-of-towners this is too much time to fill before going back to the ice.

    Great venue and atmosphere.

This weekend was a dream for anyone who likes to curl or watch curling. The laid back atmosphere of all of the players was a wonderful and unique experience to witness. The venue was well-suited to the event, and the rink was a great size for the crowd.

The curling event was excellent. The only problem was the camera men were always in the way of the play.

I really enjoyed the event. the seats were great. Liked how the crowd got into the game. My only concern is the stadium announcer mentioned somethings happening at a placed called "The Patch" but did not say where it was only that the event was happening. wished there was a program handout. but will attend again.

I would have to say it was a great show. And I applaud all those hard workers and volunteers. If I had to complain about any of it I guess it would have to be. It would of been nice to have Tv so you can see the shots from above. But I understand the pricing could be very high. But that would be the only thing I could say would improve it. My hands up to all involved!
