Creighton Bluejays Men's Basketball History

The Creighton University Bluejays of Omaha, Nebraska launched their men’s basketball program in 1911. The team remained independent until 1922, when the Bluejays joined the North Central Conference and immediately won the conference title in their first season under head coach Arthur A. Schabinger. The Bluejays moved to the Missouri Valley Conference for the 1935-36 season and once again won the conference title in their first year. Schabinger’s successor, Eddie Hickey, led the team to their first NCAA tournament during the 1940-41 season. They would appear in the tournament again in 1962 and 1964 under coach Red McManus, finishing in the Sweet Sixteen stage, followed by the same result in 1974

Although Creighton began as an independent program, and have spent the majority of their existence in the Missouri Valley Conference, the team has been a member of the Big East since the 2013-14 season. Under head coach Greg McDermott, the Bluejays have claimed one regular season championship in the Big East, tying for first in the 2019-20 season.

Creighton has ushered several players into the NBA, including Paul Silas, Kevin McKenna, Benoit Benjamin, Kyle Korver and Anthony Tolliver. One of the program’s most decorated alumni is current NBA forward Doug McDermott, who was the consensus national player of the year in 2014 after leading men’s college basketball in scoring during the 2013-14 season. McDermott graduated with the fifth-most points in NCAA Division I men's basketball and currently ranks seventh.
