About

DE LA SOUL IN CONCERT:

Alternative hip hop pioneers De La Soul are back with a vengeance in 2014, celebrating the anniversary of their seminal 1989 debut album 3 Feet High and Rising with the 25 Years of De La Soul Tour. Classic sample-based jams like "The Magic Number" and  "Me Myself and I" will be front and center as the band takes the stage in their signature throwback streetwear for career-spanning sets of their beloved hits. With a new album titled You're Welcome also hitting shelves in 2014, fans can expect to catch some never-before-heard material sprinkled in among their favorites at the group's electrifying live shows.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Kelvin Mercer, David Jude Jolicoeur, and Vincent Mason formed De La Soul in 1987 while attending high school on Long Island. Their playful, inventive 1989 debut album 3 Feet High and Rising was a massive success, peaking at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and launching them to international fame overnight. The group's 1991 sophomore album De La Soul is Dead was another critical and commercial success, criticizing the increasingly violent nature of rap culture while still remaining upbeat with hits like "Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)" and "A Roller Skating Jam Named 'Saturdays'". A string of acclaimed albums followed throughout the '90s and '00s, bringing the band out on the road for numerous electrifying tours with acts like Modest Mouse and A Tribe Called Quest. Back in 2014 with You're Welcome -- their first studio album in ten years -- De La Soul has fans chomping at the bit to catch the new material live on their 25th anniversary tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"De La Soul put on a wonderful show, I felt like I was in a dream. The hype before the show was even exciting, people were taking things back to the old school by break dancing."

"De La brought it back to the times when hip hop was fun! Lots of energy, lots of classics! I Love De La Soul!! Awesome show!"

"De La Soul put on an incredible show and there was so much energy. Thanks to them for 20+ years of amazing music."

    Slammin' Show

by sofull on 2009-08-24The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

Really great show. They have amazing energy and really got the crowd going. One of them stayed on stage and after some shouting of "De La" from the crowd he stayed on and did a really choice DJ set for about an hour. For them it is really about the love. The show was a bit louder than it needed to be, and I was excepting more of the classic stuff from 3 Feet High and Rising since they were celebrating it. But I definitely cannot complain about what they gave us. I was glad I went, and fulfilled this childhood dream.

    Still got it

by DKnowledge on 2009-08-24The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

20 years after "3 Feet High and Rising," De La is still revving up the crowd and making a show of it. Posdnuos and Dave were on point and throwing in adlib lyrics on every track, showing off their undiminished improvisational abilities. Maseo's skills on the tables and booming voice haven't lost anything either. It was short but sweet - my only complaint is that the crowd didn't get paid for their participation - we were hype too.

De La Great, intro not so good

by Madelph on 2009-08-24The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

De La was great, despite a short show, the team brought a solid performance. The opening acts were bad, well thats not fair. KO was a talented guitar player bought won no one over, which is sad considering its his home crowd. He was too erratic and too aggressive to be interesting, at times I wondered whether he should have opened for another act completely. He is a bad mix between Everlast and Kid Rock. Again he's a good guitar player but his music was painful, the back beats were circa 99 fruityloops. Note to self - first piece and homage to De La was inspired though short. Needed to be embellished more. Aside from that they were energetic, sometimes too much so. I was not swayed to part with my money for their services. They put on a show, but its too constructed and feels forced. Its Beastie boys style of ending each line with backup shouting the verse was stale. Musically their beats were good, the dj showed some skill but dropped it at times (could be much cleaner). De La owned, they brought a full energy return to classics and a fair response to questions of their age and place within todays scene. De La dropped some serious notes for the crowd but quickly returned to the fun filled flair their music manages to convey. They are a party track group and the crowd was feeling it. They visited most masterpieces from their collection and keep it turning for a long time. After their set Maseo stayed on to spin some classic Tribe tracks to keep the crowd happy for the short set. It quickly turned into an after hours dance scene, which was welcomed by the bar staff. Half the crowd parted was with the concert hall while others got to let the groove out. I appreciate his willingness to let the crowd wind down and enjoy the night as opposed to leaving us stranded. Failures of the night, opening acts were not known in advance, which left a sour taste to my pained ears. The sound system was a bit weak as it was a bland flavour of noise. The sound was flat (no mids) and the bass was bland while the treble was none existent. Phoenix needs a new sound system.

De La De La De La

by Pizzle on 2009-08-24The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

Awesome show. But if you're going to make the crowd stand around waiting for the headliner, at least put on another act. Every show at the Pheonix is like this. 2 opening bands, then wait 1-2 hours, then the headliner. Not cool. I didn't pay 40 bucks to stand around.
