    Unexpected but pretty sick!

by canadagoose on 2011-01-02Shaw Conference Centre - Edmonton

Although I have heard that people could not get in for the longest time because security was very tight and everyone had to be checked thouroughly, I was almost all the way up front so I did not have any problems getting in. And although I had never listened to Skrillex before, I was blown away by his performance at the show. Skrillex was absolutly amazing and everyone went nutz when he came on. Calvin Harris on the other hand was rather disappointing. He did not do very much and rather just played a few songs after each other, some not even being his. Well now we come to the awaited event... Deadmau5. I thought it was really fun and I loved the intro. He played well and the soundsystem worked well for all 3 artists. Everyone went crazy at the show and being all the way up at the front for almost the entire show, I was getting crushed up front pretty hard but it was still an amazing atmosphere. And for those that had a crappy time waiting outside, I just suggest you are smarter next time and show up early like me and my friends did.

    It was okay

I think it's safe to say that DJs are a dime a dozen. DeadMauS figured out years ago to brand himself with his head set and huge cube with a crew of techno wizards and turn DJing into big business. I've heard only good things and was impressed at first when we got to the Shaw. DeadMauS was keeping us dancing, but, as the night went on, there was too much lag and coasting. I found, after a while, it was far more fun to people watch than dance. I think there should have been more beats and boom and less "bulid up". The next day we went for Pho and I found myself dancing in my seat to incredible music. It was Sirius satellite channel 36 (I think). I remarked that DeadMauS could have played this radio station for all of us and the event would have been unforgettably bombastic. That's a sad statement. I think the Shaw Conference Centre should be ashamed of itself for making hundreds of youth wait outside for a very long time in harsh conditions knowing full well most people weren't dressed for the weather. To pat people down at the door was sad to see. So we had drinks at the Marriott and waited it out, missing a lot of the pre show. Would I see DeadMauS again? Sure. But not for anything over 30 dollars a ticket. It was an entertaining show, but nothing special in the grand poobah of dancing environments and DJs who really know how to work a crowd. Cheers, Richard

Amazing show in all respects. Both opening performers were truly amazing, with more emphasis on Skrillex. He is, hands down, a dubstep god in the making. If you enjoy that sort of genre, Skrillex stole the opening act from Calvin Harris. Not to say Calvin wasn't good, because his performance was very good as well, but I enjoyed Skrillex a lot more. In regards to the main event, deadmau5 was as godly as ever. The light show complimented his already exceptional music, which altogether made it an epic experience. Everything was synced and well prepared; his mask was very in tune to the rhythm and often the LEDs changed into what looked like different mau5 images. The audio + visual experiences at this show were simply amazing. I was fortunate enough to see both shows of his in Edmonton and I can't wait to see another. Amazing performance worth every penny spent if not more. Joel never ceases to please a crowd and the encore showed just that.

the show was pure epicness, sooo good...only thing horrid was the lineup waiting time, took almost 2 hours of -25 degree celcius temps to get in, feet went numb, thank god there was no frostbite... , missed skrillex and half of calvins sets even though i arrives on time... other than that it was A BLASTTTTT
