Detroit Red Wings History

Founded in 1926, the Red Wings are one of the NHL's Original Six franchises. The team has captured 11 Stanley Cup Championships, most recently in 2008, as well as six conference championships and 19 division titles. As of 2023, the Red Wings have the most Stanley Cup trophies of any U.S.-based NHL franchise. Eight Red Wings players have their jersey numbers hanging from the Little Caesars Arena rafters: Leonard Patrick “Red” Kelly, Terry Sawchuk, Nicklas Lidström, Ted Lindsay, Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio, Sid Abel, and Steve Yzerman.

The Red Wings were purchased in 1982 by Mike and Marian Ilitch, who invested their family savings in 1959 to open the first Little Caesars store in a Detroit suburb.

Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena

The Detroit Red Wings have played their home games at Little Caesars Arena in the heart of downtown Detroit since the 2017–2018 season. Little Caesars Arena is an anchor of a world-class sports and entertainment district known as The District Detroit and received the prestigious Sports Facility of the Year award at the 2018 Sports Business Awards Ceremony. The arena's construction also gave the city of Detroit the unique distinction of having the greatest density of professional sports teams — the Red Wings, Tigers (MLB), Pistons (NBA), and Lions (NFL) — in one downtown core in the country.

    Best. Game. Ever.

by House2525 on 2009-07-13Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

This was hands down the best hockey game I've ever been to... and I've been to quite a few. To start it all off, the pre-game show was amazing! I'm not a Wings fan but I had chills all through the show. The first period was breath taking. Speed and skill at it's best.

    Unbelievable Game

by Dvocks5 on 2009-07-13Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

Game 5 of the Semi finals against Chicago was absolutely unbelievable. Fast paced hockey with great chances and even better saves, and an overtime Detroit win! Could not have asked for a better game.

    Stanley Cup Final-Game 2

By far the best sports event I have attended. The only thing better would have been if it was Game 7. The excitement and atmosphere was unmatched.

    Stanley Cup Finals

by Chicoresch on 2009-07-13Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

An amazing experience. I've been to several hockey games, regular season and playoffs but nothing tops the Stanley Cup Finals. The intensity from the walk up to the building until well after the game is uncomparable. I would recommend this experience to anyone.

    Always great at the Joe!

by Soccerlemon on 2009-07-13Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

No matter where you sit, the view is great at the Joe. And since the Red Wings almost always win, it's a great time. The staff at the Joe Louis Arena are extremely friendly and helpful. Two hints--don't buy tickets for any row numbers above 23 in the upper level. Those are the only bad seats. Second hint--time your bathroom breaks carefully. You may be in line for the whole 20 minutes between periods. The bathrooms are inadequate, even by sports stadium standards.

    Hockey at "The Joe"

by DaveOrdonez on 2009-07-13Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

Even though I'm not a Wings fan, I enjoyed the game. The arena is getting a little tired, but that is part of it's charm. Waiting in line at the bathroom was painful as compared to the United Center in Chicago. The fans are really jerks to the opposing team fans, so be prepared to take a verbal beating.

    GO WINGS GO

by saleem on 2009-07-12Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

I'm happy i made to an NHL Playoff Game. I had to do it once in my life. Toronto Maple Leafs tickets would be too expensive. It was awesome and I was on NBC too.

What a great experience at the Joe!

by Velosity on 2009-07-12Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final was great! I would recomend anyone who can see their favorite team in the playoffs to do so at Joe Louis Arena! They had some technical difficulties with the score board at the beginning but it's all good!

Nothing like sitting in the enemy barn watching your team that you have cheered for all your life. I wish the result was different but it will be next season.

    Unbelievable Experience!

by Blindtrip on 2009-07-12Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

My first time in Joe Louis Arena and it was such a fun time. The fans were rowdy and really into the game, creating such a high energy. Then again it's the Conference Finals, the fans have got to be into the game!!! The game was somewhat back and forth until The Wings opened up the goals and never looked back. Beautiful, old school arena, reminding me of what Maple Leaf Gardens use to be like. With modern day arena's all dressed the same, it was really a treat for me to be apart of something special.
