About

DOUG & THE SLUGS IN CONCERT:

Canadian power pop group Doug & The Slugs has been kicking out their doo-wop-inspired brand of new wave since the late '70s, and their live shows are as fun as ever more than three decades later. Former frontman Doug Bennett is no longer with the group, but new singer Ted Okos has done a fantastic job of filling his shoes, bringing an imitable energy to the group's upbeat tunes and feel-good live performances. Witty Top 40 hits like "Too Bad" and "Tomcat Prowl" are as infectious as they were in the '80s, and the band always gets fans singing along at their rollicking live shows. Ticket buyers looking for a nostalgic pop party won't want to miss Doug & The Slugs as they relive their salad days on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Doug & The Slugs formed in Vancouver in 1977 under the leadership of singer-songwriter Doug Bennett. The band initially had a hard time booking gigs due to their name, so they took matters into their own hands, throwing themed parties at community halls that always guaranteed fans a good time. By the end of the '70s they were staples in the Vancouver music scene, and in 1980 they scored national attention when their single "Too Bad" became a Top 20 hit on the Canadian charts. Their debut album Cognac & Bologna arrived later that year, peaking at No. 23 in Canada and earning them several Juno nominations including single of the year for "Too Bad". The band remained a fixture on the Canadian charts for the remainder of the '80s, notching Top 40 hits like 1983's "Making It Work" and 1988's "Tomcat Prowl", but by the mid-'90s they had stopped performing. Doug got The Slugs back together in 2003 for several reunion shows, but in 2004 he passed away from liver cirrhosis. After another hiatus the band regrouped in 2009 with Ted Okos as their new frontman, and they've kept the good times rolling ever since with their live-wire performances on tour.

    SLUGS ROCK

by Terrible Ted on 2020-03-04Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Went to the SLUGS show on Saturday Feb 29th. The bad, the COMMODORE does not sell JACK DANIELS, they only sell JIM BEAM at 8.50 a drink, and only sell TALL CAN beers for 10.50. The show was over before 11:45 and we were hustled out. The good, I know a lot of folks didnt want to attend because there is no DOUG and if they did they made a mistake, DOUG is present in every note, every lyric, every time you open your mouth to sing along, the new singer Ted OKOS? is as good as you could ever want, sometimes it is hard to tell that it is not DOUG up there, this guy is this good. He had been in a car wreck just before the show and you could see that his face was bruised and battered and he couldnt stand for very long, but he gave it his best and the crowd ate it up. The only beef I have is the SETLIST, whoever puts it together seems to want to front load it with hits, which means the best part of the show is done before it is halfway over. In my opinion DAY BY DAY is their best song and should be the ENCORE, the crowd roars this song out, it is the 3rd song in the set so the show cannot ever hope to re reach the crescendo it has at that point. I hope they change that. If you havnt seen them and like the SLUGS I say buy a ticket, If no DOUG is a hangup then I dare you to go to the show, turn your back to the stage and listen, i guarantee you will not be able to tell the difference. I got the SETLIST once again KEEP ROCKIN

It was my Leap Yr birthday and a Milestone Birthday -

by CC on 2020-03-04Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

What better way to celebrate an extra special birthday - than to sing and dance the nite away to Doug and the Slugs (I dusted off my old Doug & the Slugs t-shirt . . . . . okay so I was a bit of a groupie back in the day). And to have them perform at my very favourite Vancouver venue -"The Commodore" with 40 of my best'est friends . . . . . it doesn't get any better than that!! A big thank you to 'Ticket-Master' Ryan Balaski for helping me with group tickets!! Soooo very helpful - thank you Ryan! And a huge shout-out to Sr Manager Melanie McEwan of the Commodore for being instrumental in making my birthday party a huge success!! And to all the band members - every one of you Slugs were great!! And Ted - you nailed it!! Hope you guys will play at my next Leap Yr Birthday Party!!

    Doug&theSlugsLeapers

by Dancerbabe on 2020-03-03Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Sharkskin is good musicians, but stoner jazz was not what I was expecting. Technically their music is good, but I fell asleep. Not the best choice for a warmup act. Doug etc were fantastic! Redeemed the whole evening. Their new singer is so much fun - thank you for your energy and good humour despite a broken coccyx. Legendary! and that fox, Simon Kendall - still hot! Venue is very professional - thank you to the Commodore!

    What a Great Evening!

by TMG on 2020-03-03Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Purchased the tickets as a Valentines Day present for my husband. Arrived to a very short line up for those of us that had reserved a table. Quick entry, seated right away at a nice table for two. Our drinks and dinner order were taken and everything arrived and was really great. The service was fantastic (Persia). Doug and the Slugs performed exactly as we had hoped for. Great sound, lots of energy, laughs and some reminiscing with a touching video. Really enjoyed singing along to our old favorites. Even picked up a CD to listen to on they way home. Really enjoyed this event.

Doug and the Slugs minus Doug

by Still a fan on 2020-03-03Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

I was impressed with Teds' vocals. Although Dougs presence was dearly missed, Ted did a great job.

Doug and The Slugs A Lot Fun Just Like Old Times

by Python46 on 2011-05-2565th Cloverdale Rodeo Outdoor Stage - Cloverdale, British Columbia, Canada

I heard they were playing at The Cloverdale Rodeo in Surrey B.C. Sunday, May 22, 2011. I had to go. I met Doug Bennett at his house during Christmas in 1987. He had a rythmic voice, even when he spoke. I was very sad when he passed away a few years ago. I thought how could The Slugs continue? They met Ted S. Okos. Wow, what a set of pipes on this guy. You close your eyes and he sounds like Doug. He has the perfect stage presence for these guys. This is the greatest honour they could achieve, keeping the music of Doug Bennett alive. Simon on keybourds, He's awsome, funny as ever, Steve on bass, Wally on drums, Richard and John on guitars, All The original Slugs from the 1978 line-up. These are Doug and the Slugs. The show was an hour and a half. Every song was great. Opened with Same old Story, then Operator, Some cover tunes done superb. It's Not Unusual, Born to be Mild. (as writen on their setlist) We know all the songs, China Town, Day by Day. Too Bad near the end just before Making it Work. 18 hits they played. Encores Woolly Bully & Walk away. They had the best Videos of the 80's. A real fun band, they had the Rodeo audience dancing and singing. We need Doug and the Slugs to perform more shows. Thanks guys for autographing my album. " Music for the hard of thinking" Their 3rd, from 1982. They have 6 great albums in total. All have hits. Great show! I can't wait for their next one.
