About

The U.K.-based power metal sextet Dragonforce formed in 1999 around the twin-guitar assault of Herman Li and Sam Totman, keyboard player Vadim Pruzhanov, and the powerful vocals of ZP Theart; drummer David Mackintosh and bass player Adrian Lambert joined the lineup later. Dragonforce had already toured with the likes of Halford and Stratovarius before the release of their debut, 2003's Valley of the Damned. The success of that record earned the melodic rockers a worldwide audience, resulting in a string of sold-out concerts in Asia and Europe. The group's sophomore effort, Sonic Firestorm, was released in 2004, followed by Inhuman Rampage in 2006 and Ultra Beatdown in 2008. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi

    Sonata Arctica stole the show

by PolkaMachine on 2009-09-26The Odeon Events Centre - Saskatoon

Overall a great show, but Sonata Arctica did an amazing job and were the highlight for me. They sounded awesome put on a great show. I wish their set had been longer, but I understand the time constraints.

All aroud great show. Dragonforce rocked my socks!

by Benthimself on 2009-09-26The Odeon Events Centre - Saskatoon

Dragonforce were definately the headliners that everyone came to see and they did not leave dissapointed. The opening band, Taking Dawn, was suprisingly good. A very welcome suprise for a relatively unknown opener. They kicked off the show with really good energy, hard rockmetal riffs and plenty of attitude. Next up was one of my favourite bands ever, Sonata Arctica, and they showed why they rule the Finnish music charts. Delivering their trademark brand of melodic power metal with good energy and crowd involvement. They rocked out with some songs from their new album, Days of Grays, and pleased the crowd with some classics like Last Drop Falls and their best track (IMO) Full Moon. I was dissapointed that they didn't play more songs, but that's probably just because I love them haha To be fair, I'm glad Sonata Arctica left lots of time for Dragonforce. Because they maximized it's potential to the fullest! Amazing set. I've never seen such a performance. Right from the start it was epic solo followed by epic solo. The talent these guys have is unprecedented. It was an energy packed show from start to finish with tons of crowd involvement. The fact that these guys can screw around on stage with each other and with the audience while melting everyones faces with their inconceivablely technical playing is testament to their skills and love of putting on a good show. The only break in the relentless power speed metal was when the keyboardist put on a solo show, which was amazing in it's own right. Including the dualing keytar battle with Sonata Arctica's keyboardist. Too much fun. Dragonforce did not dissapoint anyone and played all their best tracks ending the night with two of the best ever, Valley of the Damned, and Through the Fire and the Flames. Odeon was a decent location, and since the venue wasn't packed it was undoubtedly a good choice rather than Prarieland. Energetic, responsive crowd, with tons of hardcores, metalheads, and music lovers enjoying the show. Come back soon guys! That goes out to all the bands, I'd go see them again in a heartbeat! Great show.

    Dragonforce voice breathes fire

by ElvinWarlord on 2009-09-26The Odeon Events Centre - Saskatoon

Dragon forced rocked the house with all the amazing songs from ultrasonic beat-down. Lead vocals rocked and sounded just as good live as they do on the album. Some may doubt Herman Lee. He proved he can shred!!!! They played greatest songs from the second album inhuman rampage, like through fire and flames and operation ground and pound. They even pulled through and played stuff from the first album.

    Musically incredible!

by JEEE on 2009-09-25MacEwan Hall - Calgary

Unreal band, they pull off some incredible parts live, good with the crowd, A little 2 much swearing on stage for my liking, but got the crowd rocking. Opening Act Sonata Arctica were awesome, I had never heard of them before but I thought truely professional with great songs and talent!!!! Great Show. The first opener wasn't even in the same league as the other 2.

    Shocked and Amazed

by DeaalMon on 2009-09-25MacEwan Hall - Calgary

Once again I am pleasantly surprised at Dragonforce's live performance. I vividly recall the first time I saw them live, approximately two years ago - it was the worst show I have ever been to. Last December I received a shock when they put on a fantastic live show, and was impressed enough to come out again this September. Though I must admit that Sonata Arctica was a bigger draw. However, it is clear that Dragonforce have been working hard to reverse their reputation for putting on terrible shows due to excessive drunkenness and antics. The sound quality was good, though not the best; however, but plugging my ears (I forgot to bring earplugs) I was able to hear what the guitar/keyboards were doing quite well and I am pleased to say that it was, for the most part, bang on. Stage presence was fantastic, as always (Though Totman was noticeably inebriated) and synchronization of stage jumps was also right on. The set was solid and it was good to hear not only a lot of older songs but even a ballad, which Dragonforce do not generally play live. All around a very good night. I would definitely have recommended this show to any with a love of cheesey power metal. Sonata Arctica was, of course, fantastic. The set was quite short, only six ish songs, but the die-hard Sonata fans were of course thrilled to hear that a headlining tour is planned for April 2010. The first opening act, Taking Dawn, was also very good and (in my opinion) was not received with the enthusiasm they deserved. I will definitely be keeping an eye on this band to see what they do in their future. The only downside of this show? The hotboxing of the ballroom. As much fun as the contact high is (sarcasm) I really like being sober enough to drive home after a show and not have to wait around outside until I am fit to drive.

    DUALING KEYTARS

by Cromulence on 2009-09-25MACEWAN BALLROOM - CALGARY

The concert was excellent other than having no air conditioning and the first band was annoying and terrible. Other than that Sonata Arctica was amazing and i'd probably pay just to see them now. Dragonforce was epic and awesome aswell.

    Wrong Headline

    by Mark4Nier on 2009-09-25MACEWAN BALLROOM - CALGARY

Overall, all the bands were good. Sonata Arctica's set was much to short. Their performance was more engaging and more exciting than Dragonforce. Sonata Arctica should have been the headliner. Dragonforce's lights were unnecessarily blinding. They started giving me a headache.

    The entire show was awesome!

by DFFan on 2009-09-25MacEwan Hall - Calgary

Last nights Dragonforce show was amazing as usual. There were some things that amazed me. One being that the fan base for Dragonforce has gotten a lot younger in the past year and I believe it has to do with Guitar Hero, which can be good but I saw a huge difference in the crowd size from the last show to this one; there weren't nearly as many people. The other thing I noticed was that instead of being in the lower ballroom they were in the upper, which resulted in a smaller stage area and no A/C (which really sucked as it was still in the high 20's when we got there), which they used to their advantage by utilizing the stage as much as possible and throwing water out into crowd and showering fans with water, however their stage could have been a little larger. I also noticed that several people left after Sonata Arctica, which again was a little sad to see. The group I was with also felt that the band was not happy with the crowd, although the band swore several times at the crowd I felt that it was just part of their act....however I could be wrong. I also noticed that the guitarist loved licking his guitar strings last night, definately impressive, although I can't imagine it tastes very well! And finally the last thing I noticed was that the keyboardist lost sound during his solo/dual act and was motioning that he couldn't hear anything coming from the keyboard, so that was a little sad too. But even with all of these relatively minor things, the concert was awesome! Sonata Arctica rocked! And Taking Dawn wasn't too bad, however I can't judge as we were in the beer "gardens" during their set.

    Dragonforce

by kmariem on 2009-09-25Edmonton Event Centre - Edmonton

This was an awesome show. I loved how it was in a smaller venue so things were a bit more intimate. ZP Theart came right out in to the audience not 4 feet from us and hugged a fellow fan. We even sat right next to where some of the Sonata Arctica band members were standing enjoying the Dragonforce show. Did not however like the first band, Taking Dawn. Their music was alright but the words coming out of his mouth when he was not in the midst of a song would make a sailor blush. I would definetely reccommend this show but you may want to be half an hour late.

    Sonata Arctica - Amazing Performance

by Tru7h on 2009-09-24Edmonton Event Centre - Edmonton

Of the three bands that played, I liked Sonata Arctica's performance the best; their songs are fantastic, they're all great performers and excellent musicians. I'd love to see a Sonata Arctica-only concert here in Edmonton sometime in the near future. The only reason I didn't rate this 5/5 is that Sonata didn't have time to play enough songs; I feel that the other bands, Dragonforce and Taking Dawn, may have detracted from the overall concert.

    Dragonforce Delivers

by RTWalrus on 2009-09-24Edmonton Event Centre - Edmonton

As a regular metal concert goer of some 20 years, I took my son and nephew (11&12) to Dragonforce as their birthday present. Like most people having only heard their smash hit "Through the Fire and the Flames" 50 bijillion times on guitar hero, I really had no idea what to expect. All I can say is WOW. The bands cohesion and energy is unparalleled to anything I've seen and they truly delivered a remarkable performance. From their crazy, speed metal and epic vocals to a most awesome keyboard solo, I would absolutely recommend checking out a Dragonforce show- hey, even I bought a T-Shirt!

    Great set money well spent

by cadniummonky on 2009-09-22Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Three great bands never heard taking dawn before but they're pretty goo. My first time getting to see Sonata Arctica they were great. My only complaint was that their set was to short. Dragonforce this was my second time seeing them very energetic and entertaining but the lack in musical variation gets a little tired after and hour. Would reccomnd it to anyone at least once. Mic seemed to be choppy and not work sometimes for all the bands. My first time in the Commodore and it's a great venue will go there again.
