About
Duke Blue Devils Men's Basketball History
The Duke Blue Devils men's basketball team is one of the most victorious programs in the NCAA. Duke's history is highlighted by five NCAA Championships, a record-23 Atlantic Coast Conference championships and 18 Final Four appearances.
The Duke basketball program began in 1905, and joined the Southern Conference ahead of the 1928-29 season. Under head coach Eddie Cameron, the Blue Devils won their first three conference championships between 1938 and 1942. In 1953, Duke co-founded the Atlantic Coast Conference and finished the inaugural season in first place. However, the Blue Devils really began to build their dynasty in 1980, when Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski took over as head coach.
Coach K’s tenure brought the Blue Devils their first of five national championships in 1991, 15 ACC Tournament titles and 13 Final Four appearances. Krzyzewski also presided over many of the Blue Devils’ most memorable moments, including Christian Laettner’s overtime buzzer-beater shot in 1992 and the 2001 “Miracle Minute.” Krzyzewski retired in 2022 as the winningest coach in NCAA men’s basketball history with 1,202 victories, and was succeeded by his former player and Duke assistant coach Jon Scheyer, who has led Duke to two ACC Tournament championships, in 2023 and 2025, and March Madness runs advancing to the Elite Eight in 2024 and the Final Four in 2025.
Duke has produced 13 National Players of the Year and 116 NBA draftees, including a record six No. 1 draft picks. Additionally, Duke is the only men’s basketball program to advance three freshmen to the Top 10 of the NBA Draft, twice, in 2019 and 2025. The Blue Devils have finished the season ranked No. 1 in the AP poll eight times and held the top spot weekly for a record 146 weeks. The Blue Devils have the third longest streak in the AP Top 25 in history with 200 consecutive appearances from 1996 to 2007, trailing just Kansas and UCLA.

Duke Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium
Cameron Indoor Stadium became the home court for the Duke Blue Devils in 1940. Originally named Duke Indoor Stadium, the venue changed its name in 1972 to honor former Blue Devils coach and longtime university athletic director Eddie Cameron. The venue offers one of the best home court advantages, with the Blue Devils recording 20 undefeated seasons at home through 2025. Eager fans occupy the designated Krzyzewskiville area outside of the arena ahead of big games, and once inside, become the Cameron Crazies in the Duke student section. Cameron Indoor Stadium has undergone several renovations, most recently in 2016, and has a current capacity of 9,314.
