Syracuse University Men's Basketball History

Syracuse fielded its first basketball team in 1898, and the team achieved its first winning record three years later when John A.R. Scott started coaching the squad. The Orange played independent of a conference for decades, but when the Big East Conference coalesced in 1979, Syracuse came on board as a founding member. The team won 10 regular-season Big East titles until it joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2013.

From 1976 to 2023, the program was coached by Jim Boeheim. During his tenure in the ’80s, Syracuse boasted a crop of phenoms, including Rony Seikaly, Pearl Washington, Sherman Douglas and Derrick Coleman. In 2002, future NBA star Carmelo Anthony played his freshman year at Syracuse before leaving for the NBA draft. The Orange won the NCAA Championship with Anthony in 2003. Syracuse has appeared in the NCAA Final Four six total times and overall has made the NCAA Tournament an impressive 41 times.

Syracuse's biggest rival is the Georgetown Hoyas, a team they’ve been squaring off against since the 1930s. Syracuse also has rivalries with the UConn Huskies, as well as a newer rivalry with the Duke Blue Devils.

  • Overpriced Uncomfortable Seats

    by coachdb44 on 2017-02-08Carrier Dome - SyracuseRating: 1 out of 5

I attended the Syracuse- Florida State Basketball game and paid over 100 for a spot on a hard, tight, crowded, uncomfortable bench. I ended up standing to watch the second half of the game as my seat and section was horrible. Your squeezed in like sardines and are sitting on one big long hard bench. No room for people to walk by you and absolutely no comfort. I would NEVER EVER buy a seat in this section because there aren't any. No point in complaining about this as Syracuse will continue to use the Carrier Dome as long as fans will come to these games in droves and they do. Totally disappointed with the price I paid for a horrible seat ( or non seat)

Excellent college atmosphere, good result. Transportation options limited when leaving and traffic was still scrawling an hour or more after the game.

Had a great time at the Carrier Dome watching the Orange win. I go every year at least once a year, travel from Toronto. Good atmosphere, and so much better than any NBA game. Go Orange!

  • Great time!

I purchased the family tickets up in the 318 section and they were great! When I got there, I was able to park in an excellent location - you get a parking pass with this deal. Then, everyone was so nice at the Dome! There was one lady cleaning the bathroom after the event and she wasn't letting anyone into the restroom, I thought that was pretty tacky, but otherwise all the other workers were Super! Well, then I bought two $100 tkts, thinking that we could change seats throughout the game so that everyone could get a close up.....NOT NECESSARY! I would buy the upper level again in a heartbeat. We were behind the basket and could see great! Don't waste money getting on the floor! Come early, though. That is the best - you can watch all the players warm-up and get excellent pictures.
