Edmonton Folk Music Festival coolest place to be in August

Vibrant ... dramatic ... colorful... and friendly. When describing the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, musicians and patrons are unanimous. This year’s edition promises to be all that and more for the Edmontonians, visitors, and volunteers who will claim their patch of grass on the hill at Gallagher Park to listen and move to the beat of more than 60 music-makers from the four corners of the globe.
Whether you come to listen to music, reconnect with old friends, or join the army of volunteers who keep the festival running, this family-friendly event has become world renowned since it was started in 1980.

Children 11 and under and seniors over 80 are admitted at no charge.

    Music was too chill

by Silverbaby on 2018-08-12Gallagher Park - Edmonton

In the pouring rain, it helps to have upbeat music! This year the music was less appealing for me overall. Would love to see more music getting people up and dancing on the main stage.

    Beer Garden an organizational desaster

by uknow on 2018-08-12Gallagher Park - Edmonton

When it takes three line ups and an hour of your day to buy 2 glasses of beer something is not right ! Eliminating jugs means that four people have to line up to get the equivalent of two jugs. Why not sell liquor tickets the same way you sell raffle tickets and sell them to the people waiting in line to enter the garden thereby eliminating one of the hurdles to enjoying a drink. The present system is archaic The uncontrolled crush of freeloaders who invade the front of the stage make all the effort of running a tarp worthless. In a rain event all crowd control is lost and security staff unable to cope and withdrew

    Edmonton Folk Festival

by LATTEHEAVEN on 2018-08-12Gallagher Park - Edmonton

So far three days of great entertainment. Even the rain didn’t deter many people Saturday.

    It was okay

by Lennr on 2017-08-16Gallagher Park - Edmonton

The side stages were great. Friday and Saturday main stage only so so. Thursday canceled. Sunday main stage affected by huge downpour. The use of tarps leaves significant seating areas unused. This practice really should be reviewed. I think I'll check out other folk festivals before I return.

    Classic as always

by Folkfester on 2017-08-16Gallagher Park - Edmonton

Great musicians, too bad Thursday was scrapped. Single tickets got refunds, 4 day pass holders got nothing.

    Main stage a little weak

by TheBigCahuna on 2017-08-16Gallagher Park - Edmonton

We found that many of the main stage acts were not main stage worthy. By contrast some of the acts who didn't make the main stage should have been there. With one fewer side stage there seem to be fewer workshops and more concerts so it is often difficult to see everybody you want to see. There were some great performers at the festival however.

Folk fest is the best weekend of the year, I highly recommend it to anyone regardless of taste in music. The atmosphere and the people are incredible.

Weather Shut Things Down but Well Handled

by RobsMac on 2017-08-15Gallagher Park - Edmonton

I arrived at Folk Fest on Thursday night super excited for the evening ahead. My friends and I placed our blanket on the hill and wandered the grounds. They had a fantastic water bottle filling station which I loved!! And lots of food selection this year. We had a couple of drinks in the beer gardens which were expanded so you could actually sit in the grass and see a few stages. Once back on the main hill, the weather took a drastic change and we were unfortunately evacuated from the site before seeing either of the two big bands for the night. The evacuation was handled well and calmly, and was a tough call to make to keep everyone safe. I was disappointed but understood the reasoning, and you have to be prepared for that possible outcome when going to an outdoor show in Alberta. But, Folk Fest has refunded everyone for Thursday tickets which was so surprising, and greatly appreciated. I would go back to Folk Fest regardless, but this makes me that much happier to.

Edmonton Folk Music Festival never disappoints!

by keglegintheyeg on 2017-08-14Gallagher Park - Edmonton

Nothing can compare to watching a live folk music performance as the sun sets behind the cityscape and lush river valley on a warm summer's eve. Every seat on the Gallagher Park hillside is a good one. I will attend this festival every year for as long as I can.

    Mixed emotions

    by Tobe133 on 2016-08-13Gallagher Park - Edmonton

We went to the EFMF on the Friday to listen to Mary Chapin Carpenter and Sunday for everyone! Sunday was great! Friday was a different story. As much as I love Mary Chapin Carpenters voice she put everyone to sleep with her slow songs. As much s artists need to promote their new songs, they still need to throw in some of their most popular like "I Feel Lucky" or "The Bug" (the best). The whole night seemed to be slow. It was the talk of the beer tent conversation on Sunday. Very disappointing. Tickets did not sell out as fast this year, I believe that says something. As much as they are trying to bring in artists that attract a younger crowd, I think they forget that the late 20 - early 30 grew up listening to the parents music. My 27 year old came on Friday to hear MCC and my 29 year old text messaged me on Saturday and said she thought that Carol King would make a great Saturday headliner. Some of the oldies before they are gone, Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell... Other highlights... the beautiful sunset agin, never disappointing!

Nice summer evening for music at Folkfest

    by sloppyjoe1 on 2016-08-10Gallagher Park - Edmonton

Sat by stage in tent area for people with disabilities and had the best view ever of LP's whole singing extravaganza! Enjoyed Italian Ice Cream too located near our tent.

    Good, but something was missing

by forza on 2016-08-10Gallagher Park - Edmonton

I love the EFMF but have noticed a change over the last few years... Still many fantastic musicians, but I am missing some of the bigger names that they've had in the past: Bonnie Raitt, John Prine, Dr. John, Emmylou Harris ... etc. that we were always assured of seeing?? I love listening to great music but would like to hear some old favorites. They seem to be getting acts from the previous year that were great on the small stage, but they don't always translate over to the Main Stage. Overall, it was enjoyable this year, but It's just missing that 'pop' that I used to love.

    Astonishing as per usual

by RaeLaPlume on 2016-08-10Gallagher Park - Edmonton

Folk fest is a wonderful festival that caters to all ages and music lovers of all genres. The festival is so well put together in the help of the volunteers really makes everything so seamless. the only thing that can be improved on potentially would be somehow shortening the beer garden lines however if you're patient it really doesn't take too long. Thank you to every One who volunteered and made this year just as amazing as a last.Nathaniel rate live in the night sweats were unbelievable

    first time objective

by someguyfromsask on 2016-08-08Gallagher Park - Edmonton

seemed to be a well organised event. I went to see one act really and was disappointed when 25%of the crowd decided it was time to leave shortly after he came on. No consideration to the people that paid good money to see the show. Sound was awesome, did end up sitting way closer by the end, wish we had short chairs . Did enjoy Jason Isbell he's a fantastic performer and those people that left didn't know what they missed !!!

    Great event for family spirit

by OneHappyMom on 2015-08-13Gallagher Park - Edmonton

The Edmonton Folk Festival in about bringing together amazing international musicians in one fabulous open air venue and much more that we didn't expect. Our four children enjoyed making carvings from soapstone, they learned how to juggle, they played in a water park and discovered chocolate covered frozen bananas. It was a weekend of pure joy...when we had to go home my kids would have preferred to stay if they could.

    Edmonton Folk Fest NOT audience-friendly

    by Ianthe2153 on 2015-08-12Gallagher Park - Edmonton

First, the content: Line-up weaker than in the past, but still something for everyone. The music itself (what the EFF used to be about) was not the problem. However, as far as I can see, the festival's focus on making $$$ is gradually destroying it. Once we've bought our passes -- or food, or bevvie tix, or CDs, or trinkets, or swag --apparently, from the EFF's point of view, we "consumers" have fulfilled our destiny. It may not be intentional but this attitude reveals real contempt for the thousands of people who faithfully attend the event because of their love of Folk Music. Sadly the spirit of PT Barnum ("there's a sucker born every minute")is alive and well at EFF!

Overall it was awesome - but a crazy learning experience for a first timer! I did the whole tarp lottery system for the first time, got there at 6:45 am which made for a very long day... Since we were only 4 people I only used half the tarp, but when it came time for the show I was wishing we had more space because the People in front of us had chairs that seemed pretty tall to me... Looking around, it Seemed there was quite a bit of unused tarp space. Behind us was a very big tarp with only 2 people on it. Not sure how this system can be corrected to be more accommodating for more people. Blue rodeo was amazing though! Wow it was hot during the day.
