Edmonton Folk Music Festival coolest place to be in August

Vibrant ... dramatic ... colorful... and friendly. When describing the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, musicians and patrons are unanimous. This year’s edition promises to be all that and more for the Edmontonians, visitors, and volunteers who will claim their patch of grass on the hill at Gallagher Park to listen and move to the beat of more than 60 music-makers from the four corners of the globe.
Whether you come to listen to music, reconnect with old friends, or join the army of volunteers who keep the festival running, this family-friendly event has become world renowned since it was started in 1980.

    Spectacular - Irish group...awesome

by oceanna on 2011-08-09Gallagher Park - Edmonton

Stage acts were awesome. Overall attendants were respectful and polite. One area of concern was the traffic flow on the botom of the hill. No one seemed to know which side to walk on to come and go. It seemed that everyone leaving from stage 7 to go to stage 5 area was a wall of people headed out and no one moving to their right so folks coming in the other direction could get thru. It did interfere with the lineups at concession points, especially Fantasia where the flood of people walking to the stage 5 area was like 12 wide. Just an area to monitor for next year. It is certainly a well run event and I will be there next year. I did introduce my friend this year and she thoroughly enjoyed it and will come again. Thankyou to everyone who made it a happening event. Dee

    Music for everyone

    by Tobe133 on 2011-08-09Gallagher Park - Edmonton

The music was great with a nice variety. The only negative we found this year was that there seemed to be a lot more people, making it feel very overcrowded, especially on the side stages and at the food booths.

Amazing Crowd, Amazing Bands, Amazing Atmosphere!

by JLKL on 2011-08-09Gallagher Park - Edmonton

This was my first year attending the Edmonton Folk Music Festival and it was absolutely unreal. The wide variety of musical acts, food vendors, scenery and fans was really impressive. Noah and The Whale, Dehli To Dublin, Imelda May, and KD Lang absolutely blew me away. Not to mention everyone on the U22 Stage! I'm so excited to have been a part of this great event! Looking forward to next year and finding out what bands will be in attendance! I think the Edmonton Folk Fest will be a new tradition for me and I look forward to many more years at this great event!

    Folk Fest Rocks!

    by Harley50 on 2011-08-09Gallagher Park - Edmonton

The 2011 Folk Fest was an amazing event in all ways. So many incredibly talented musicians and the event itself was run so well. The volunteers worked so hard to make everything perfect and it was. The talent brought to Edmonton for this event was stellar. The only complaint was that the ETS buses to the Park and Ride were late everyday with pickups and there was alot of confusion at the general lineup at the bottom of the hill gate to get in in the mornings.

    They can't control the weather

by Cushy on 2010-08-09Gallagher Park - Edmonton

At least I don't think... but it was a beautiful, sunny weekend and one would almost think the organizers have had a couple of meetings with Mother Nature! I've alway been impressed with how well-run the festival is, and this year was the best yet! As for the headlining acts, Van Morrison was predictable. If you knew about his reputaiton going in, you could not be disappointed because he is well, Van Morrison. Loved that he played G-L-O-R-I-A. as the closing song. In contrast to Van, there is Ben Harper. He gave the crowd the compliments that we so eagerly wanted from Van, almost as if to make up for Van's lack of charm the night before. I can't think of a more charismatic performer than Ben (we are on a first name basis of course :)). He reads his audience and plays (and compliments) to please our ears. I bought the 5 day weekend pass with the Wed. night endowment performance, but could have gone home satisfied after the Wednesday and Thursday performances by Van Morrison and Ben Harper alone! Unfortunately, Gord Downie on Thursday (whom I normally love) just didn't connect with the audience. Rumour has it that he was in a fowl mood that day, and perhaps that came out in his performance. He's still a legend in my mind though! Alejandro Escovedo was a captivating performer. Kudos to him for performing in a dapper suit in the intense heat of the 2pm, Satureday slot. I danced away like a hippie to his set! The beer tent was improved from past years, and good on the Folkfest Organizers (Terry W. et al ) to keep the Alberta Big Rock Breweries as their beer sponsor. Another rumour was that Budweiser tried to steal the account from Big Rock by offering a king's ransom and the organizers didn't take the bribe. It only seems right to have a local micro-brew as the sponsor of this wholesome, Alberta event. Overall an excellent fest!

brandi carlile - such a treat!

by catbird on 2010-08-09Gallagher Park - Edmonton

I thoroughly enjoyed the folk fest this year. Van Morrison's show was fabulous - great band. I was not at all bothered that the beer tent was not open, or that photos were not allowed, or even that Mr. Morrison did not communicate with the crowd outside of his music. After all, that is what we came for! Jimmy Rankin was very connected to the crowd, and his music was also wonderful. Natacha Atlas was an unknown for me going in, but it was well-worth the experience. Local belly dancers made it even more fun. Sarah Harmer was lovely - too bad the rain dampened my ability to listen. Brand Carlile's enthusiasm for the venue and the crowd were contagious. I am a big fan of her song-writing and her voice.

All events were great except one.....

by Anonymous on 2010-08-09Gallagher Park - Edmonton

I was very disappointed with Van Morrison. For such a well respected and inspiring artist I found him impersonal and cold. Even though the music itself sounded great, there was no interaction with the crowd whatsoever. I could have been listening to a cd being broadcast and I wouldn't have known the difference. It will definately make me rethink paying the extra money on top of my pass to attend the Wed evening event for coming years.

    Ben Harper ROCKS...!

by Notyou on 2010-08-06Gallagher Park - Edmonton

Gord Downie was imbarrasing... He should consider practicing with his... "band" once before that kind of show! Ben Harper was absolutly rediculas... I have never been so impressed by the sound quality and vocal confidence of a show. BH played the crowd so professionally and actually seemed to be genuinely happy to be there. It was the first time for me to see Ben live, but I hope not the last! He is on my "absolutely" list whenever I can make a show!

    Ben Harper was amazing

by concertmaniac on 2010-08-06Gallagher Park - Edmonton

For me Ben Harper was the highlight of the night. His voice was the only one that carried well live, it sounded beautiful. I've seen him twice now and he does not dissapoint.

Van at Edmonton Folk Fest 2010

    by abbey1212 on 2010-08-06Gallagher Park - Edmonton

Van was great! The weather and location couldn't have been better! This was my first folk fest experience and I can't wait to go back next year! Only drawback my friends and I had were 2 people in front of us that didn't comply with the seat height regulations(They had regular lawn chairs. Also, security did not seem to care that they didn't.

I loved the Van Morrison concert in Edmonton last night. He played some greats, the musicians were all exceptional, and I left with the glow you get when you hear really wonderful music. Yup, there was no banter with the audience - that's what I expected. Instead we got 1.5 hours straight of fantastic music. There's a checkmark on my musical bucket-list. Thanks Van and band!

    Mr. Princess

    by CatLady3 on 2010-08-05Gallagher Park - Edmonton

I am over 18 and for the price of 100.00 a ticket, I should be able to make my own decision about whether I want to have a beer. I have a mother, I don't need Van Morrisson telling me where and when to drink!

    Folk enjoyer, CD listener

by iwouldbegrey on 2010-08-05Gallagher Park - Edmonton

I loved the shows. I loved the environment. But, the ending seemed quick. No large roar of applause or true cue it was over. Until we were out of the gates and then we heard the announcer thanking us for taking in the show.
